Everton Youth Teams Thread

Crazy that formation, Tait hasn’t got the tactical nous or three CBs to make a back 3 work , 19 goals shipped in last six games . If we didn’t have so much turmoil elsewhere in the club Tait would surely be out.

I was curious about the formation myself and found him talking about it here which I kinda understood but also kinda didn't:

The young Toffees have primarily operated within a 3-4-3 setup during recent games – a move away from last season’s heavily used 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formations.

On that switch, Tait added: “In that system – 3-4-3 – we’re asking the wing-backs to put a big shift in and get forwards. We felt it would suit Patto coming in. And Isaac Heath, it suits him because he’s more of an attacking player.

"We try not to stick to one system. We’ll do a system for a certain amount of time and I normally pick systems to suit the players I’ve got, to be honest, and then work on that.

"So, if they do go into a first-team setup and they have to play in different positions or different systems, then they’re adaptable."

Seemed to work for about 75 minutes anyway..

Seems very sensible to me.

I don't think a lot of fans understand the positional knowledge Premiership players need, when a team changes formation slightly the role of every single player also changes.

The biggest challenge for young players making the step up to the first team squad is learning what is expected of them in different circumstances.
It is also a challenge for new players joining a club which explains why managers if possible try to get players in early for a full pre season. It isn't at all about fitness alone.

….do you think that would be a strategy he’s deploying himself or being instructed by the DOF or even Dyche to try?
Gradually moving towards a Thellwellian European 3-5-2, get yer wellies on, or even better some hooves, bit of both...

Thanks . There is in fairness to Tait good logic there and in relation to player development it makes sense, but picking a formation is one thing , I just don’t see anything that suggests he’s innovative enough as a coach to make it work in practice out on the pitch.

Honestly the result of the U21 game isn't important in the grand scheme of things. Would I like them to win every game sure I would. But developing the player for 1st team is the #1 priority of the club. If he doesn't make it then our DoC if u like is still fulfilled to him in making him ready for a football career. Letting a 3-0 lead go needs analysis all the same.
