Everton Youth Teams Thread

The fact that there is so much discussion/debate regarding who will wear the armband while Jagielka is out is a statement to the character of players at the club; hopefully this is something the younger players can learn directly. What a culture that would be, to groom leaders from the academy.

character that was sadly lacking in the relatively recent FA cup semi final which was a complete bottle job

....and good pro's not only know they have a responsibility to mentor younger players, they enjoy doing so. I think we generally have a group of good pro's and if that is the case those who follow will be of a similar ilk.

except for that bad snide mccarthy going around snapping people.

Two Evertonians on the list:

Mason Holgate | Age: 19 | Pos: Defender | Club: Everton

The former Barnsley youth player of the year signed with Everton this summer for a fee of £2 million. The 19-year-old has represented England at the under-20 level and was an unused sub for Everton's first team in their last Premier League fixture. Holgate has an athletic build which gives him the versatility to play full back or centre back, and he is quick over the ground to intercept or tackle and is confident in possession with a good range of passing from back to front. If he is to break into the team on a regular basis, he must start to show an awareness of danger and get his positioning right, not always relying on his pace to help him recover. Further, in forward areas when playing right back he has the engine to get up and down the pitch but must add quality to his crossing.

Jonjoe Kenny | 18 | Defender | Everton

The 18-year-old Everton academy graduate recently returned to the club after a loan spell at Wigan in Division 1. The competitive defender/central midfielder has shown he can handle senior football and the club are now looking to further extend his development by loaning him to a Championship side. Kenny has natural leadership qualities: He's always encouraging his teammates and leads by example, never being one to shirk a challenge (he was booked three times in seven games while on loan). Further, he's a player who reads the game really well, seeing danger which enables him to fill any holes left by teammates. Kenny is a regular England youth international and has been called up to the England U19 squad for upcoming matches versus Japan and Holland. To make the leap to Everton's first team he needs to keep working on his tactical positioning and body position; although he's not slow to recover if he fails to get his distances right and overcommits, he could have a problem doing so at the top level. He has great attitude and, with the coaches support, he should continue to move forward.

That's actually an interesting comparison between Holgate/Kenny re which is closest to making a PL start, with Holgate ahead and on the bench recently.
"Holgate has an athletic build" is probably the biggest difference in the two, Kenny barely seems to have developed physically in the past 12 months. Having said that, as the article says Kenny doesn't shirk a challenge , and he's also pretty sound in the air for a relatively small player. Both have experience of coping at League 1 level at Barnsley and Wigan, Kenny has the most experience at international level but is a year younger. The recent U19 exposure will have helped Kenny if it is to be a Championship loan next, whereas you would expect Holgate to remain around the first team squad/ u 21s this season allowing FF to do further work with him.
As ever with these "next best prospect" articles there is a need for caution, but we've discussed that many times.

Interesting they added "defensive midfielder" to that write up. I hadn't heard of him in that role, but is it possible because of his height, he is being projected into that role?

....do you mean it's because of his lack of height he might be seen as a defensive midfielder? I suppose it is possible, he's busy enough and has the ability to go past players. I see him more at full back but he is certainly a prospect.

Yes I meant lack of height. But they may also see Holgate as a better prospect at RB and are looking for positions for Kenney. Jags played DM to start his career at Sheffield United. Might not be a bad move to work the lad into the midfield and then move back with more experience.

last season the U18 seemed to play him in pretty much every position bar GK and striker so you well be right that they are trying to find his ideal position. Like Eggs think he will probably end up as RB though.

I suspect Holgate is just following the same progression Stones & Galloway (still doing) were asked: learn the trade at the full-back position and then move inside. I think Holgate could play for Everton at some stage in either position but CB seems to be the most likely. However we really need some cover for Coleman with an actual full-back and out of Kenny, Holgate, Pennington, Browning etc. I'd say Kenny offers the most. Still always surprises me he's only 18; seems like we've been talking about him for years now.

It sounds like Harry Charsley had a good game in Ireland's u21 0-0 draw with Norway.

"Everton midfielder Harry Charsley was a real positive for the home side with his bright attacking play and work off the ball. He had the game's first attempt on goal in the eighth minute but his snap-shot flew narrowly over.

Charsley showed his class again in the 34th minute when he produced a brilliant turn in the box and his strike drew a save from visiting keeper Per Kristian Bråtveit."

He's not long turned 19 so is playing up two age groups as he could play for their U19s. A player who has scooped awards at u18 level but someone who doesn't get much attention here, just foes the business under the radar, good on him for that game for Zireland.
