Very small squad they're goin with this year if there's only 12 of them plus goalies.
Suppose the likes of Branthwaite and simms won't be in this week though.

1 game per week with sporadic cups. Only need like 15-16 players don't ya. Can fill subs with talented younger groups for the experience.
Pity we didn’t consider swapping him for David Brooks, yes I know hindsight is a wonderful thing!!Clubs wanted him, we said no. Sheffield Utd originally tried to sign him off us when they sold David Brooks to Bournemouth.
If Bobby Carroll stays fit he will continue to improve and make an impression, good hard working skilful midfielder for the U23’s, plays for the team and makes other players play their part. You need to take this in the context of the last 6 games where there have been some pretty appalling performances , particularly from the midfielders. So sadly I’d say if Carlo is not trusting Beni Benigime over the likes of Davies, Siggi, Bernard, then it’s hard to see him featuring in his plans , but would love to be wrong.
Simms was always behind Kean for a shot at striker, so no surprise there . He’ll get his chance preseason , potentially he could take it, but I’d say he is probably a year behind Gordon , so it may be mid next season before his chance comes , or he may well be on loan then.
The other three youngsters in the squad we know about, Branthwaite, Gordon and Virginia . Beyond these it’s hard to see anybody who’s next to step up from our current U23s , maybe returning from loan Lewis Gibson and new French youngster Niels Nkounkou. Kyle John got a lot of training time with the1st team but defensively didn’t look ready yet. Ryan Astley is behind Gibson and Branthwaite for a CB position and nobody else in his year is close.
In the year below the two 17 year olds Tyler Onyango and Lewis Dobbin offer the most chance, they are a long way from being 1st team ready but who knows they could do a Branthwaite after Christmas.
The reality is we’ve played this “ who’s next to step up” many times and in the past few seasons Gordon’s the only one we’ve collectively got right . Me, I just enjoy watching these u18/23 on their journey with no huge expectations of them , but they sure as hell beat watching the overpaid dross I’ve seen in the past 6 matches .
I did a quick count of 12 which seemed to match who we currently call “U23s” then realised we had Bolassie amongst themVery small squad they're goin with this year if there's only 12 of them plus goalies.

. I am presuming that the likes of Gibson, Connolly, Bowler , Simms who played or trained during lockdown have been given extra time off . Will know when /if they release videos.Indeed. Carroll should have recovered from his knee op and be raring to go, scored a few goals too, I hope he’s grown a bit or comparisons with Liam Walsh will be inevitable .If we don’t loan out / move on Beni and Adeniran , Onyango should get one midfield spot which leaves a lot of competition for maybe 1 maybe 2 positions. If Bobby Carroll stays fit he will continue to improve and make an impression, good hard working skilful midfielder for the U23’s, plays for the team and makes other players play their part.
Yes he does remind me of Liam Walsh, got that fight and bite about him, Liam never made it here, well he had ambition and was in a hurry to play proper football, he knew he wasn’t going to get anywhere playing U23’s football, stalled at Bristol City, won a 1st. Division champion’s medal while on loan at Coventry last season, I hope he continues the climb back to the premier league, but back to Bobby Carroll, he’s got it in him to be a very good player.Indeed. Hasn't Tyler Onyango been moved up? Wasn't with the first team eitherI'm guessing this is the current squad, 12 + goalies as Unsy mentioned.

I think he trained with the first team a little. I have a vague memory of it anyway, could be wrong!Hasn't Tyler Onyango been moved up? Wasn't with the first team either
I think you're right actually, can't find any evidence of Onyango with the first team so put this down as me misremembering! I suppose that means one of the 12 players I mentioned is injured thenHasn't Tyler Onyango been moved up? Wasn't with the first team either
