Everton vs Middlesbrough

Well what a nice way to make my 4,000th post, a clean sheet (but I don't know how), three points and up to fifth place.

My view of each player is as follows

Howard, did what he had to to, handled well and made catches rather than the big fist 7/10

Hibbert, did nothing wrong, cleared when he had to, still relies too much on the big hoof 7/10

Stubbs, this lad can't go on forever, he is slow but makes up for spead with his trusty ability to read a game and the fact he has a blue heart of lion is another vital asset 7/10

Lescott, he seems to be covering the full back too much, possibly the trainers are relying too much on the lads strengths to the extent that it may effect his game. It was a good scrambled defenders goal. 7/10

Baines, not sure about his ability to cover at the back. The lad is superb going forward but he must remember he is a full back. Many Boro chances came down his flank. 5/10

Pienaar, possibly his best game for us to date, he scored a first class goal for the first time in two years so that could be a load off his mind. Is it any co-incidence that he played so much better when Mikel is on the park 7/10

Jags, being a blue he seems to get very nervous playing in front of his own fans. He was indecisive on more than one occasion and early on tried a cross field pass that nearly let them in. 5/10

Arteta, this lad is becoming a Goodison legend in the truiest sense, he is simply magnificent 8/10

Faddy, although he didn't score this was in my opinion one of his most effective games for the club. Some of the attacking interplay with Mikel, Pienaar and the Yak was a pleasure to watch 8/10

Yakubu, he surprised me, possibly because he was playing against his old team but he was lively, creative and worked for the team. He joined in goal celebrations as though he'd been here years 7/10

Nevile, was simply Phil Nevile 6/10

We would almost certainly have scored more had the substitutions not been made, the curse of Euro football.

Lets no kid ourselves either, early especially, our defence was opened up like a tin of sardines, Boro's attack was just inept. We are still better with last seasons back four and they should be reassembled for the remainder of this season. Big Vic was at times struggling to stay in the game, young Skywalker should be given his chance.

A win and 3 points is the most important thing from this game. But from what I have seen and read not a convincing victory. See Moyes reverted to type, Hibbert at RB, Neville in midfield and an awful game, but 3 points is what counts.

Where was our much vaunted £20 million strike force?????????????

Also per the latest stats Hibbert is the 5th worst distributor of the ball, the players above him are all with Fulham.

Mikel Arteta is just incredible. The way he can move around the pitch with the ball and do anything from anywhere is just outstanding. He provides us with so much. We will [Poor language removed] win on Thursday with him!!!

The only good thing about that game was the result, the performance was poor to say the least, how we managed to keep a clean sheet is beyond me, our defence was all over the place, they cut us open time and time again, only the fact that their finishing was piss poor saved us from a home defeat.
The good points, Arteta and Lescott were outstanding today, the bad points, Neville, i lost count of the times he gave the ball away, way of the pace today.
I have every confidence that we will go through on thursday but we will have to play a lot better than today.

Firstly the plus points. 3 points, 5th in the league and the first clean sheet of the season.

The first half wasn't good and we could have conceded a couple of goals had their finishing been anything at all. We've developed a bit of a worrying trend this season of being bossed in midfield, despite nearly always playing two holding players in the middle. This then invites pressure onto the defence and has, in my opinion, contributed to our defensive problems this year. In the second half this area of the game was much better and they didn't really trouble us in the second half. I'd be very tempted to put Graveson in as soon as he is fit because he gives us the duel benefit of being very comfortable on the ball and gives the opposition pairing in midfield something to worry about defensively so they wouldn't get the free run they're currently getting off our deep lying pair.

In posession of the ball we still lack a good deal of composure on the ball that often results in posession being given up very cheaply. Again in the second half this improved and we posed more of a threat in the final third. Arteta really is a class apart from the rest of our midfield, his awareness of all around him and composure on the ball are outstanding. Pienaar got into the game more in the second half although I hope there is more to come from him. As Monty said, McFadden had a decent game and kept the ball moving well at times, although he still has a tendancy to be a flash Harry when a simple ball would do just as well.

Overall I would like to look on the positive side of things. We're 5th in the league, through to the next round of the League Cup (with a nice draw) and still in Europe, all despite the team playing some pretty poor stuff thus far. If there isn't really much improvement to come then we can worry but if this team can improve, especially when in posession, then we could do some good things this year.

Through to the last 16 of the league Cup...................... correct

Beat Borro................................................................Correct
Qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Cup.................

One down, two to go, eight days that will either put us in the dumps or make us swell with pride, can we do it?, [Poor language removed] dead right we can.

Two down one to go. COYB

they have stevie g, well we have stevie p!!!!!:P
Could have something there fozzy he played well today i,d like to see him in the centre of midfield moyes has got to stop neville and jags playing in there both were very poor today in the middle.
On the plus side much needed win stubbs solid as a rock and a special mention for hibbert today had downing in his pocket and apart from distribution played very well and of course mikel back what can you say about him his football speaks for itself good win lads today

I was very disappointed to see Hibbert starting - but I was very pleasantly surprised by his display. The best passing I've seen from him - ever.

And if Pienaar keeps improving at this rate, he'll soon be the second best player in the PL - just behind Mikky who is unbelievable. Encouraging that he's regained the confidence to shoot as well.

Stop looking for the cloud in the silver lining, you lot - be happy!

A much needed confidence boost ahead of next week - but still not a convincing performance !

Negatives - Neville and Jags in the Middle

Positives - Artetas back and a goal for Pienar

Whats the odds for Jolean to finsih our Top scorer for this season:D :D

3 much needed points and back up to 5th i believe.
its good to see arteta back.

and i won a tenner
joleon lescott anytime scorer
shame it wasnt the winner as they was doubleing the odds for a winning goal but a tenner is better in my pocket than william hills lol

Im predicting 11 goals for him this season :) , we should have a vbet on it...

Jagielka had a terrible match up until the last 10 minutes. Neville had a good match fro the first half, then went back to his usual ways...but he made some great passes...

Arteta was back on form today, a delight to watch, and he had shots!!! :o :o :o :D

Pienaar is basically like osman, but defends better, and is more skillful, and isnt as selfish either,

Yakubu back to his ways, doing [Poor language removed] all, Anichebe did more than him imo, he did nothign other than have a weak shot, and miss a sitter of a header.

Mcfadden was a positive for me, he played good, which i didnt expect him too, because he doesnt normally when he plays a full match.

MoM Arteta closely folowed by lescott.

Its good to have Howard back too!!

And the Referee, to be fair...was a [Poor language removed]

Also its good to see a more passing everton, with pienaar and arteta basically showboating, then passing, etc...finally were playing ssome good football...now just to make it last an entire match!

i agree with the majority of that except the ref bit, riley, words cant do him justice. had someone ran on and butted him, i would have cheered. he was disgusting. and what the [Poor language removed] yakubu got penalised for standing in front of schwarzer for i will never know.

persistent fouling is an offence by the rules of the game, how many times does arteta, pienaar, mcfadden have to be chopped down in 'nothing fouls' for a referee to clamp down on it.

its [Poor language removed] [Poor language removed], and riley is as bad as poll. the sooner he [Poor language removed] off and dies the better.

absolute prat.

Obviously well pleased at the win, but really concerned about our play at times.

Neville really doesn't appear to realise that there is another team on the pitch waiting to take the ball off him - does he actually think he has time to stop with the ball in the middle of the park and no one will attempt to tackle him? - so many times he gets caught in possession. He also keeps making blind passes, straight to the opposition.

The other worrying thing is at the back - someone needs to tell the players that it's a good idea to defend in the middle of our 6 yard box. I counted at least 3 times in the 1st half that a player had oodles of space, bang in the centre of our area.

Also still think our attacking play looks odd too. We play a ball down the middle to the Yak or Mcfadden, who will be standing still, facing away from goal, ball bounces off either of them to empty space - attack breaks down. Or, defender reads it like a book and either clears or clatters player in the back. Why do we never look to play balls in behind the defence, running on to goal?

Maybe Moyes felt we need to grind out some results to get back on track, and this is the way to do just that. Today it worked but could have easily gone Boro's way had they stuck one of their chances away.

Hope there is a huge, team improvement over the next few games.
