But some keep saying he deserves a chance. He deserves to hold the GOT accolade this season "there is a player in there somewhere". Seriously why was he not binned along with the other dross in the squad? Presumably because nobody would have him. So why pick him at all?

I can only assume that Silva wanted to give him every chance before punting him to high heaven, the problem is we dont have loads of other options.

Its preseason, so its not a worry yet, but if he picks him from next week I will certainly question his judgement.

The number of goals we have conceeded this pre season is frightening......... As is the fact our starting eleven probably won't look significantly different next week.

We all know what we need, we've just left it too late

He looked like he wanted to play LW or CF. But he definitely wasn't playing RW.

We have all known if for some time as well.

I'm pretty sure before Sam was booted that he gave a shopping list that included defenders.

You can have all the money in the world at a football club, but if you don't spend it correctly you may as well not have spent it at all.

It wasn't terrible but there were a few positives and plenty of negatives.

They scored with their first three attacks but had the third wrongly ruled off.

Agreed, offensively we looked good - Richarlison is some player, Walcotts pace and energy getting close to Tosun and Gylfi making some tremendous through balls.

Defensively in the middle of the park, there was a bit of bite on show Gana and Gylfi getting stuck in - I actually witnessed slides tackles, more yesterday than I have seen all last season. However the defence was woeful.

Other positives would be the fact Pickford, Digne & ideally a CB will change the dynamics.

Just seen the highlights. It’s not great, from Sandro and Seamus, but it was accidental. What happened after was worse! How much did Jagielka drop off to give the boy a chance to shoot??? We need centre halfs and that team changes entirely.

8th is one way to look at it. Another is that we finished 17 points above the drop (given goal differential) in a year when the bottom half of the table was very poor indeed.

It's not hard to imagine the drop being at 38 or so this season, which would mean that if we have a similar season but reverse just a few results due to leaked goals, we go down.

Last season's goal differential suggests we stole a few points in close matches; that sort of goal differential should in principle have finished 12th on 44 points.

So I'd say that a finish of 8th last season flatters to deceive regarding the state of the team, and there's reason for grave concern about the state of the center of defense. We simply cannot score enough to stay up while shipping three goals a match against good resistance, which is how the preseason has gone. If we can get that fixed, we'll be fine. If not, Silva will quickly go the way of Koeman and we'll have to bring in an anti-football manager again to try and stave off the drop.

Soz, stopped reading at goal differential, load of baloni. I could turn around and say all the games we lost by 1 goal could have been draws.

Nah, Sandro intercepted with a horrendous first touch putting Seamus under all kinds of pressure.

Previous to that. Coleman told Sandro twice to watch his man and he just jogged into the middle of the pitch.

Sell.

Yeah I’ve already said it wasn’t good! The room the striker was given was worse though. Jagielka made the decision to give him space whereas Sandro was accidental
