Ian Snodin played a kind of sweeper role at times I think...cant remember how it worked

Your're not wrong. It was usually 5-3-2 with CBs such as Richard Dunne played on the right and expected to get up and down the wing. No wonder he was sold.

I think smith's record was seven defenders in the first eleven, i'm sure this has been matched in recent years.

Who said anything about three at the back?? It'll probably be this:

Howard
Jags Heitinga Distin Baines

Coleman Gibson Ossie Mirallas

Anichebe
Jelavic

Blue Union just posted it on FB too:

[h=5]24, Tim Howard;

23, Seamus Coleman; 6, Phil Jagielka; 5, John Heitinga; 15 Sylvain Distin; 3, Leighton Baines.

11, Kevin Mirallas; 4, Darron Gibson; 21, Leon Osman;

28, Victor Anichibe; 7, Nicica Jelavic.[/h]

You can read that another way though, slot Jags to RB, Coleman right mid and Mirallas left and it's 4-4-2
