He was the forums player of the season, beating Sigurdsson (who had a very decent season that year) by 75 votes;

If you constantly go through Gomes and he's confident, the weather is nice, we're playing well and have a Gana picking up everything off the ball - and you're happy enough for your centre midfielders to be "an engine" (translation: simple passes and nothing else) then he's sound.

But for me, he doesn't do enough on the ball to compensate for how bad, and how slow he is off the ball.

I hoped our new midfield would give Gomes a real lift. It hasn't, it's just shown him up.
Always needs too long on the ball, if teams give him time he’s very good, thing is, all the other teams have him Sussed now.

I've never seen a player let people run past him so easily. It's comical looking. Holding a player up has got to be one of the easiest parts of football. Genuinely have no idea how anyone could make it look so easy while actually trying. It's properly weird.

Nice to see Gomez and Mina dropped today... and rightly so too!

Opted for £25 BT monthly pass in the end.
Guess it’s a lot less than actually going to game anyway.

Not messing about with Holgate is he?
Straight back in the starting 11
Obviously worried about United's pace up front.

The decision to bring him straight back in concerns me tbh. He didn't look sharp during his very short pre season, which caused his self inflicted injury, and he hasn't played a full game in 4 months. It's a risk IMO.

A fully fit and in form Holgate is still one of the first names on my teamsheet. I just don't see how he can be physically or mentally ready for this game.

Like many in here I'm also bewildered by the absence of Gordon from the squad. I'd actually have started him today. Not only has the lad looked very decent whenever he has played this season, but the alternatives haven't exactly covered themselves in glory with their performances.

Having said that, I am a lot happier with the team selection than I was last week. I think Carlo dropped a clanger last week, both with his starting formation and his use of substitutes, but it looks a lot more balanced today.
