Today wasn't our best performance, it was one of our most clinical. I would rather play like we did today, score goals and seal the three points with relative ease rather than perform like we did at Chelsea, admirably and with control, but to be killed at the death and punished for our lack of potency. Today highlighted for me how confident and tactically astute Roberto is as a manager and also, with no disrespect or disregard to
Moyes' reign and his ability as a manager, the improvement and progression we've made under the stewardship not only from Roberto but from Graeme Jones, Dennis Lawrence and the rest of the coaching team.
The last few years of
Moyes' era felt stale and today for me showed the difference in managerial abilities between Martinez and Moyes. Martinez showed against Arsenal his cleverness as a manager; he gets a lot of hype in the media and from us Evertonians for his positive approach and the way he has set us up this season and got us playing in a style which is both easy on the eye and gets results but he doesn't get enough credit for the tactical intelligence which he has. To stick Lukaku on the right was adventurous to say the very least but he pinpointed the vulnerability of Monreal and it worked. Today he changed our style of play; he knew United would close us down, he knew how they'd dictate the play for long periods, he knew that Carrick and Fletcher would do a similar McCarthy/Barry job on Naismith and Barkley and he knew that if we played with power and pace and a little more direct, we'd succeed. He is not just a positive manager, he's not just a breath of fresh air for the club after a few years of stagnation, he's one of Europe's most innovative, intelligent and tactically brilliant managers and he's proved all of us wrong and the Premier League wrong.
And we're not just a better team as a result of the introduction of Martinez, I think we're a better club. Bobby has embodied and embraced the traditions of our football club and maintained the character which we had under Moyes and fused it with the style of football that graced Goodison in the days of Harvey, Kendall and Ball. Martinez has drafted in not just top players but characters who will hopefully be at the club for the long term. We're not the finished article, there's a long way to go but the way he has conducted himself, the way the team has conducted themselves and the way the fans have conducted themselves, suggests we're not far off. We may not have the financial power to compete with the Chelseas and Kopites but we have some of the most promising youngsters within the game, which I am confident we will see in the royal blue jersey next season. This is supported by the fact he has given Stones, Barkley and Gerard a chance this season.
We've been dormant for too long and with the other lot waking up now, I think we're starting to emerge from our shell. With our fans, with our team and with our manager, we are getting there. Kenwright deserves credit; you could tell he had a strong bond with Moyes but he had to be bold and make the right decision, which he did and we are not only reaping the benefits now but will do in the future.
It'll all good lads, I know it's cheesy but it is and I'm excited. We may not make CL but the revolution in place at our club is unbelievable. Martinez and the staff have made it a grand old team again and the future's bright and we can do it, maybe not this season but most definitely next season.
COYB and a very happy Easter to all Evertonians on GOT and across the world.
