Brighton fan here. You are correct to say that it goes back to the Cup match, but the managers were Venables for Palace and Mullery for Brighton. They really disliked each other.... In the match Albion won a penalty which was successfully dispatched by Brian Horton, but the referee ordered it to be retaken when a palace player encroached while the penalty was taken. Mullery was upset and lost it when a Palace fan threw hot coffee over him. Bad blood ever since...
Toys out of prams....get over it ffs.....lol

Christ, we'd ship about 10.

If you're asking Gomes to hold, then you're losing what he brings to the side going forward. If he drives forward with the ball, then who covers for him. Bernard? Gylfi?

Brighton have some decent players. Yes they'll come to defend but they'll have a threat on the counter with pace down the wings, and if Gross isn't fit then March will play down the middle.

Coleman will start. And so he should. He's not beyond criticism but people seem to forget that Kenny had one of his worst games in an Everton shirt against Leicester. Add in the fact that it does neither us nor Seamus any good for him to be dropped. He needs the minutes to build up his sharpness - which is all this bad run is. 18 games in 20 months, split up into spells of 4-5 games at a time, is no good for regaining form. He needs a proper run in the side.

Mina/Zouma is a toss-up (mainly because Zouma can't play obviously against Chelsea).

Lookman for Walcott, no problem there. It suits Theo to come on later in a game like this I reckon.

So the other decision is really, Bernard wide left and Richarlison central, or Richarlison wide and Tosun/DCL to start.
Its a different system.
I'm of the view this three man midfield will be as good if not better, defensively, than the set up of Gomes-Gana.

Try and make this as briefnas possible, avoiding going into much detail:
- You point to Gomes being better positioned higher up yet in a 2-3-1 set up it leaves Gana to do much of the covering. And if you haven't noticed already this is what opposition teams are trying to exploit. You've highlighted some of BHA's strengths which will suit attacking this set up.
- This 3 man midfield along with Rico and Lookman out wide will hold the ball better and switxh the play more effectively = more possession and less chances for the opposition.
- when losing the ball in transition, if coached well by Silva, they will be better positioned and balanced to either high press or set a defensive formation
- when gaining the ball in transition they will be better off - you'd always want either Bernard, Gomes or Sig winning or receiving the ball in transition rathet than Gana. Not only does this give us better quality in the initial attack, it also is important defensively in not losing it shortly after,ie they are able to make the attack more dynamic , so the opp defence can't easily with more chance of holding on to ball and/or creating chances. This has been a major problem with the unholy trinity, esp if the opp team move quickly into the spaces once getting the ball.
- it gives us not only the standard Silva options of quick incisive attacks mixed with/ or wing build up, but they can also change it up with ball retention - allowing overall to dictate the tempo more often. This is not going to happen nearly as effectively with Gana.
- Sig has surprised me this season with his defensive work. And think the more he's involved in it the better an attacker he will be. He doesn't need to be involved in every attack, he is much more effective finding the moments and space to come into it - box to box.
- Bernard you want in the thick of it like Sig. Can't recall what game it was but he came on in a cameo working inside right with Kenny winning the ball back, being a sound option under pressure to receive the ball in transition, and looking the goods to get attacking going again. He would balance Sig.
- leaving Gomes in the middle. I'd like to see what he can do defensively. Not many doubts he can hold a central role in possession but I'd like to see what he can do defensively. Whether he has the discipline and skills. We could hunt and wide for a good holding mid and fimd we have one under our nose. Whatever the case we should find what he's like there. It could give us a serious quality in options not only on starting 11s but also in changing tactics during the game.

Mmmm. No coffee thrown, hot or otherwise. Mullery received some ...err..."good natured banter" from Palace fans at the end of the game to which he responded with flicking the V several times and hurling his loose change into the Palace fans.
I'm always surprised when fans of other clubs can't understand our mutual loathing.

It could potentially work in a less physical league, but against Brighton - a big, physical side built on solid foundations looking to hit on the break, it'd get torn to shreds.

I'm not saying we can't play a three-man midfield, it's just that I can't see those three working together from the start of a game. It's pure FIFA-esque throw the sink at them.

You'd have Bernard and Gyfli trying to fill the same spaces and that would leave Gomes with a hell of a lot of work to do.

If you have Gana as the screener in front of the defence, then Gomes and Gylfi, there'd be more of a balance. Davies probably suits this system better than he suits a 4-2-3-1 as well.

Regardless, it ain't gonna happen tomorrow. I can see pretty much the same team starting, maybe one or two tweaks, which is all that is needed anyway.

For the record... I wasn't there but Mullery (and others) mentioned the coffee incident.... 'Good natured banter'? - Now that is probably more debatable. Personally I am completely indifferent to Palace - 'loathing' just expends too much effort ...

I've been going to watch football for over 30 years and have never had a hot cup of coffee at any ground.

Is it just me or are they still missing a bit of fight and real spirit. Not really seeing it yet. Near the end of the Man U game we had a throw in the attacking end and they werent exactly running to get the ball and get us back in play and gunning for the draw. And that was our captain who should be the most dependable for that kind of example to the rest of the team.

It still all seems a bit fragile. Which is not necessarily a bad thing in such an early stage of the new managers time with us....but everybody seems very positive here. I still see a team perfectly capable of a bad run and bad season.

Some bright signs but still all very up in the air for me.

4-3 to the lads

Fair play mate. If truth be told I admire what your lot have achieved since The Goldstone was sold out from under you. Occasionally I loathe Palace!

We've won some games lately, but frankly haven't played very well for the large part of the games for me, so I'm inclined to agree here. This is perfectly understandable given the circumstances. This is certainly a "transition season".

The signs for the future are unambiguously positive however, so optimism is reasonable. We just might have to wait a bit for the 10-15 minute spells to turn into full 90s.

Hi. Coming to the game tomorrow with my son for the first time in a while. Can someone tell me do the players still sign autographs on their way in?
