One of the main reasons Baines got so much stick in the World Cup is because Gerrard didn't come across and help him or cover for him when he went forward.

The way the two midfielders cover the fullbacks is actually the main difference between a 4-2-3-1 and the 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. It's why you don't see McCarthy or Barry getting that many assists or goals and why you do see our fullbacks so far forward.

More bluster. A holding midfielder is expected to plug gaps in any system. More often than not, that will be covering for a full-back. #yawn
