Is it me or just from our midfield options do we have a great deal of versatility? The point being the interchangability specifically going forward that could have us run markers in zigzags trying to keep up with a move. Some of the one touch stuff last night was joyous, and the unusual overlapping runs that put wide players central and vice versa allowed space to be made to be exploited at will. On top of which the attacking intent of Baines and Coleman when introduced provided even more options that left Man U struggling to keep up. We showed pace and a willingness to work the ball forward (usually on the deck) that had their back line in knots.

I'm calling it now, at least 30 league goals from midfield this season.

Im excited to see a bit of pace with the new chap. Weve all seen with Donovan that a pacy winger as well as providing creativity also gives an outlet when were under constant attack last night which relieves the pressure and will help stop us playing so deep when we go 1-0 up

Pienaar will be the player that makes us tick in the last third this season IMO. I always though he ceded the initiative to Arteta when they played together and looked more assertive and willing to go and create when Teta got injured. Last season confirmed that to me and I can see him having us playing some lovely stuff this season. Throw in a player like gibbo who changes defence to attack quickly and we could be a dangerous unit.

I think having a defensive midfielder with such good technique like Gibson really changes how quick the midfield can shuttle the ball round. I thought not having Cahill in there really helped to. I loved the man, but he was hardly a 1 touch specialist

I think we need to calm the **** down

Lets just see how we go on in the next 6-7 matches

Thought we were fantastic in some games at home towards the end of last season with Pienaar and Osman rotating, causing teams all kinds of problems. Sunderland in the league is probably the best example.

I want to see us play this type of football away from home as well though. Too often we go to places like Stoke, Villa etc who make it difficult for us and we fail to come up with any real craft or ingenuity.

Saturday will be a good test. We're likely to have a lot more of the ball than we did last night, let's see what we can do with it.

i loved the triangular movement when fellaini would run ahead of the midfield and wait in the box next to jelavic, pienaar would drift inside with fellaini was, and baines would push up to the left wing position.

tbh i didn't think fellaini, baines, and pienaar had their chemistry perfect yesterday, but i think its only gonna get better

**** it. Some of the play last night gave me a hard on not seen since the heady days of the Arteta/Pienaar/Osman interchangery of yesteryear

I dont think anyone here is claiming that our first 11 rivals the great Ajax side of the 70's but the midfield is pretty fluid, especially with the way Baines joins them. Or we could be a miserable **** and point out that its not technically total football as Distin wasnt doing backheeled throughballs while Hibbert marauded down the left wing doing Cryuff turns.

I can imagine that the thread title would cause some chuckling for Kopites browsing this forum.

Let's be honest, if we went on a Newcastle forum and saw "Toon Army Total Football" as a thread we'd be shaking our head in disbelief.

FAR too early to be discussing Everton like this.
