Everton sign deal to scout for world's best players in Football Manager video game

Nov 14 2008
EVERTON have become the first club in the world to sign up a computer game to look for the next footballing superstar.
The Premiership side have done a deal with the makers of the bestselling video game Football Manager to get an early look at their database of 370,000 players worldwide.
It cuts out the first stage of scouting for players - waiting for feedback from the club's network of talent spotters.
Football Manager's footballers, from junior level upwards, are meticulously researched and rated so that game players can choose them to make up their own dream team for competitions.
Clubs can use the same data to short-list potential targets all over the world before flying out to evaluate them.
Previous highly rated young players on the Sports Interactive game included two teenagers destined for world fame - England and Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney and Argentine wizard Lionel Messi.
Football Manager relies on its own network of 1000 scouts in 50 countries monitoring 20,000 teams.
Everton will get exclusive access to the full database.
The deal is special for one of the game's creators, Paul Collyer - an Everton fan.
He said: "The database is the most extensive scouting network in football so Everton FC is making a top signing."
Football Manager studio director Miles Jacobson added: "Clubs use the game to research certain players ... but formal recognition by a top team is fantastic."

I just cant see it bearing any fruit. They're trusting a computer game, they're trusting the view of a guy they have never met and probably will never ever meet.

Though I would put my hands up should we sign a wonderkid from zimbabwe in january.

Absolutely. Anything that gives us an edge on the competition in this area should be utilised.

Maybe then Moyes can use it too and reach a level of football management knowledge as demonstrated by some on here.

GET THAT AISSATI IN DAVEY LAD, HES ACE.

The competition to source a Premiership quality young player is now immense, thanks to Wenger's Arsenal model.

Anything that gives you an edge should be considered. Apart from putting Glitter on the scout list natch.

The world's gone mad. Talk about the ultimate in out-sourcing.

Still, if Everton are getting some coin from FM then I suppose we should just take it and spend it and not complain too much.

Its a great move IMO.

Its a database of stats that they have teams of people collating and gathering info for from around the world.

And most of the time they players that are great youth prospects or cheeky unknowns are spot on.

Its just a stepping stone. It wont be a "ooooh he's good, lets buy him" in real life, it'll just be interest -- lets see the player and make our minds up.

Nice to see the creators (all bluenoses) putting something into the club too.

10 or even 5 years ago, this would have been a [Poor language removed] joke. But in the world we live to day. Anything that gives us an edge is a bonus. The scouting for this game is 2nd to none on the planet. I saw somthing a while ago about it.

If UTD or the r/s had done it 1st, everyone would be slating kenwrong an hecels for not doing it!!
