I would love nothing more to see the likes of Gomes, Iwobi, Delph, Holgate follow James out the door but I doubt we are that lucky.

I think the lads attitude has generally been quite good here, and in honesty he hasn't been kicking up a massive fuss since here (like others have). However I also think he's pretty lose to washed up. I'd say the additional games we got out of him last year were him playing through the pain/injury barrier, and he probably goes over and above for Ancelotti. I can completely see why Brands or Benitez would be open to shifting him.

Once a player starts to get injuries in their mid-late 20's it never ends well. Your body just doesn't recover as well. I notice it into my 30's, and my powers of recovery are just nowhere as good.

It's a shame, as when he plays he is wonderful in patches. What was interesting for me last season though, we didn't actually play that much better with him in. Mina on the other hand made a massive difference. In the PL having a 6 ft 5 grock who can power weaker teams attacks away goes a long way.

I agree mate we got more out of him than I thought - although take away the opening 9 or so games where we had plenty of possession etc I think his form tailed off as we became more defensive/counter attacking which we will from the get go under Benitez.

You have to assume though that he'll be much more likely to down tools/fall out with Benitez than Ancelotti you can see why the club are looking to move him on as thats an inevitable sideshow for me that is brewing.

My own view is that there just aren't many takers. Thankfully he's only got 2 more year, so at least we aren't tied in on the contract.

Mate that first paragraph is very much "it's OK that Rom is gone we'll spread the goals around." I can understand what you're saying and respect the positive outlook but there's a good reason the team played to Grealish so much and it's that your midfield is utterly crap. Which you've done nothing to improve. And while Bailey and Buendia do give you a large chunk of what Grealish did that midfield remains a weak point for me. I expect you'll be at least as good as we will, definitely better to watch, but I still feel like you're just shy of having enough to make a run at Europe.

But considering you've sold your best player this window probably hasn't been a catastrophe so you should feel good!

I wouldn't say the midfield is crap but I agree it is a bit soft. We need a strong DM that would let Luiz play more forward. Marvelous improved a lot in the 2nd half of last season but we are getting linked with a new DM every day so I expect to see one signed in the next week or so.

It's not looking good though is it mate? I mean, I don't even feel angry anymore. I look at the reports of players we're linked with and just sit here and sigh. It's so depressing.

Me too Fred, I read the news, listen to the clubs sound bites, see war breaking out on here and I just can't seem to get annoyed. Frustrated, deflated and numb seem to be my main emotions.

I never thought I would be this disinterested at the start of a season.
