I know what you mean but I just wish we could move away from this type of signing. Just not a good use of resources in my opinion
I think that depends on how much resources it is. The problem in building a squad is you just never have the money to do it all, but you dont want to leave big gaps. Right now, we have a #1 in DCL, so spending 50 million on another striker would make no sense with our other needs. However, we dont have a good enough 2nd option for when he is struggling or injured, which is brutal for the team.
The issue then is what young player do we have who we know we can trust in big games, and is cheap, AND willing to sit behind DCL. But an older experienced player, IF you can get them on cheap wages as they realize they arent what they used to be, can fill the spot well and be willing to take a backup role. If hes cheap it seems an easy choice, if hes expensive it makes no sense over a young developing player. The whole idea though is its just a lot less costly and a good use of resources, buying you a year of time to find a long-term player.
This type of player to just fill a role is key in every team. The problem is when you are relying on a number of these older players to be the main guys that you pay huge wages and fees for.
