Godfrey was massively hot and cold last season. I still haven’t got over his attempt to play offside against Sheff Utd at home. He has a long way to go to be a Premier League centre back imo.
Yeah his positioning was poor but we saw obvious progress by and large I think. Almost like players can actually improve if they're coached right - and I don't think Ancelotti was a particularly hands on coach but he could definitely organise a defence.
We don't play with any compactness or shape. Or centre-backs are consistently dragged wide, or caught out by simple long passes. There's a famous phrase (round here like) an old rugby coach at Wakefield Trinity once used in training: "spread out in a bunch, lads"
I honestly think that's the way Everton try and keep shape. And that then exposes players' flaws. Whereas the entire point of a system, unless you have perfect players, which few teams do, is to cover flaws and play to players' strengths, while working on those flaws in training to improve them as players.
