Everton have the 14th highest possession in the league, cloggers?

Keeping possession is just a stat to demonstrate a lot of tedious 5m sideways and backwards passing. Give me a team with a swash buckling, risk taking approach any day of the week so long as it works.

No, it's a pretty good predictor of how many points a team gets at an aggregate level. But it is of course correlated with other variables, but even adjusted for this I mean to remember, that it was one of the most robust variables. Especially if we separate the proportion of long balls, and measure teams that preferably use short passes.

I would like to find the balance between the brilliant stuff we played at the start to the perceived solidity we have now. Not going to lie, I preferred the football at the start of the season, tightening up has us still fighting for Europe at the expense of the football being enjoyable.

Depends what you enjoy and what you feel about certain styles of play.

What a load of [Poor language removed]. Does that mean the long ball merchants across the park are top notch. Shows us a graph mush.

Giving over possession for long stretches of a match is a reflection of Everton's generosity of spirit.

We don't mean to spoil the other team's fun, after all, and only require a couple of brief moments for James to thread the ball to Richarlison or for DCL to connect with a corner kick.

Possession football isn't the be and and end all.

In the long-run though, being able to retain possession is an attribute of a better side. Not necessarily better than your opponent on the day, but the prospects for success are surely improved overall if you have more of the ball than not.

We are unpleasant to watch. I'm not concerned about that in the main, and it doesn't mean we have not improved, we certainly have, but I'd like in time to see us develop into a team and squad that is comfortable on the ball, and players that are decent technically.

As good a side as Leicester are for example, I still find it a bit galling that they can come to Goodison and dominate us on the ball, pass through us, and have us engaged in rear-guard defence for extended periods. It has to say something about the relative strength and development of both squads, and it does so.

We don't have the players to engage in prettier football, that is effective. In that respect, I'm critical of the sum total of Brands' efforts over three seasons. We would still have been far from the near the finished article anyway, but more could have been done I feel. Ancelotti has much to do.

Liverpool is an interesting case. In the beginning under Klopp, Liverpool used relatively many long balls, but gradually they have become one of the teams with the most ball possession.
