Everton has never been the same since.

I think to dominate for a long period of time, over more than one cycle of a squad, you need quality off and on the pitch and not sure we ever had that since Moores (which was before my time). The 80s success was down to Kendall 100% so regardless of what might have happened without a European ban, once he stepped down it was only ever going one way. There wasn't that leadership on the board for sustained success.

Seemed like a lot of stuffed shirts running the club at that time - Sir Philip Carter was a good clubman and a respected voice in the league, but it needed someone way more dynamic to take the reins at that time.
The prem was a bit of a slow burner, as well, IIRC - people talk about it now like 1992 was some sort of year zero, the day the money faucet was turned on. But it took a while to get going which makes it all the more aggravating to have missed the boat - it needed ambition to borrow money and think big like you say, but it wasn't like a wild 100-1 shot that needed a crazed visionary to see.

The complacency and inaction stretches back into the Moores era, too. I've long believed this to be the case, and reading Gavin Buckland's new book - Money Can't Buy Us Love - just confirmed it for me.

Since they stopped renting the cusions in the upper bullens.

Silva would be well gone if they were still sold, the over 70's would be lobbing them almost all the way to the dugouts.
Only meffs lobbed them mate, those with skill employed a skimming action holding the cushion with the right hand, with the right arm extended across the chest and left arm. Then a quick flick of the wrist, accompanied by a series of blasphemous expletives followed the cushion, as it glided gracefully onto some poor sod in the paddock! That was proper fan power, none of this cobblers posting whingey tweets on the internet! :)

You can tell those of us who used this tactic a lot, we are all crippled with carpal tunnel syndrome. - heady days!

In the modern era the answer has to be when lineker left. That’s when things went badly wrong, Rooney being sold brought a bit of stability from what I remember and gave moyes the funds to propel us to 7th. We have been there ever since.

We won the league the season after Lineker left.

The season after Rooney left we finished 4th.

Rooney signed for United....just saying

The rot started when John Moores got too old to run the club.

Kendall bucked the trend & performed miracles, punching way above the club’s financial weight.

Rooney was our equivalent of North Sea Oil. Just as Thatcher sold us down the river giving the rights away to private investors, our very own fat fraud cashed in on him to keep himself in place. I despise them both.

Moshiri’s millions should have put us back on track, but a combination of bad decisions & the stink of the old guard just keeps the mediocrity going.

And on that happy note.... ;)
