The QF v Boro in 09, being stood with my oldest mates shoulder to shoulder at the front of the Street End as the final whistle went knowing the Blues were Wembley bound

The Semi Final v United in 09, celebrating my birthday with 2 of said mates on an all day bender and being near legless in Lloyds Concert Square as Jags belted the winning penalty in

Wembley 2012, **** result in the end but living out a boyhood dream of going to Wembley was something I'll never forget

Really? "was once as important as the league"?

When was that exactly? I agree its prestige has fallen massively but it was always second to the league in my book..

Well, it was never as important as winning the league but time was it was more important than finishing second.

And a million times more important than winning the Fourth Place Trophy.

Beating Arsenal 2-0 in the third round, 1981. We absolutely battered them, as I remember - the scoreline flattered them and when Mick Lyons got the second, everyone on the Gwladys Street went absolutely mental. I was hugging and kissing total strangers.

I was 16.

You've got to understand that in those days the FA Cup Final was the only live TV game. The whole country watched it. There was no such focus on winning the league.

27th January 1988 ........... The last of the Sheffield Wednesday replays. Anyone on here stuck on the coaches on the M62. First goal went in everyone happy, second everyone singing, By the time the third ,fourth and fifth went in everyone wanted the drivers head..... Wasn't his fault like but the roadworks. Pulls up outside Hillsborough at half time and no more goals.

The the Middlesbrough replays same season with last minute goals for each side

Ricky hill Luton Town ......... Remember his goal hearing it clunk in of the post. Sheedy's equaliser and Mountfields header.

The Villa Park Semi's

Evoked some memories here......

Was the seasons showpiece, as you say it was the only game of the season that you could immerse yourself in completely.... and DID, even when your team wasn't in it, now because basically a dead rubber at the end of the season will be assigned as much tv time as the final used to it's become little more than a sideshow and the nation is far more likely to be keeping more of an eye on 2 or 3 games in prem or even championship than what's going on at Wembley.
I always thought ECWC was better than UEFA myself as well, very often the FA Cup winners (here & abroad) got a boost and the team that won ECWC often won their league in same year and had a good European Cup the next.

As much as it's a thrill to go to Wembley still, now it's the thrill of going to watch your team in a great stadium but for me the place just doesn't have the aura of the arl place, yeah it was a dump but had a mystical feel about it, also works out peyaar pricey as well, teams that have had to play there in LC, FA semi, FA Final, Comm Shield.... well there's more than a Season Ticket there in 4 games, as far as taking kids ? well each game would cost you MORE than a season ticket for them.

It's a toss-up for me between watching the '66 final in my friends house (he was a Sheffield Weds fan) when we came from 0-2 to win 3-2, and being at Wembley for the '85 final against Watford.

For me my earliest memory was watching the 66' final at my Gran's on a black and white tv! Then as an 8 year old actually going to the 68' final in a car with my Dad, Uncle and Grandad, and crying all the way back to Liverpool after Jeff Astle cracked one past Gordon West!

Great post and I couldn't agree more.

I remember to this day waking up on cup final day even when we weren't playing and setting out the whole day around the match. The RS v Wimbledon, Coventry v Spurs etc all stick in the memory. The whole sporting world used to stop for the match didn't it?

The FA could bring back that glamour in an instant by awarding a champions league place to the FA Cup winners.

Watching us as a 11 year old in the 66 final on TV was great, except me mum thought that the bloke that ran on the (Eddie Cavanagh) was me dad and screamed at the telly 'you drunken bars*ard'. Don't know what time he got in but was in the doghouse. But being there in 68 was something else, to actually go to Wembley, what an experience, getting the train at 8.00 am with me dad and his mates and going to London and Wembley.
At Euston after the game I was standing there watching all these Evertonians dancing and singing in the station. Unbelievable scenes, saw nothing like it in my life. I was standing next to 2 coppers and they couldn't believe that grown men and women would be celebrating a defeat. Wasn't until a few days later that it actually dawned on my that we lost.
