Everton's winning goalscorer in the 1906 FA Cup Final, Alex 'Sandy' Young, was born in Slamannan, Stirlingshire ON THIS DAY in 1880.
Joining the Blues in 1901, he spent ten years with Everton and scored 110 league goals, before being transferred to Spurs, where he scord on his debut, ironically against the Blues.
From London he moved back north for a spell with Manchester City, before he decided to emigrate to Australia.
However, things turned sour for Young when he was charged with fratricide. The FA supplied evidence that during his career he had been prone to temporary insanity. In June 1916 he was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to three years imprisonment. However, he was not released at the end of the term on the grounds of ‘mental weakness.'
After a long absence he was able to return to his native Scotland where he died in 1959.
