Meanwhile, new £75million signing Romelu Lukaku was completing the formalities of his move in Los Angeles yesterday.

The deal may rise to £90million with add-ons but United were keen to point out the extra payments to Everton will only be made if the Belgian striker performs at his highest level and helps the team to titles and trophies.

A United spokesman said: “Unlike the Anthony Martial deal which included add-ons for hitting early goal targets, Lukaku’s deal is structured very differently.”
