It's your cup final" as they're fond of pointing out. If it is then I doubt there's been a shitter cup final than the Super Sports Screen Cup in the 80s. We lost that didn't we, they be omens them.
It's the second and third fixture I look out for. The first is the first game, followed by these then the last game - which is an inherited habit from the decade proceeding Moyes. In fairness I doubt either side will be looking forward to this one as were both, by our own standards, a bit rubbish this season so far.
Our nearest and dearest come to us in times of toil, just how unfortunate this wasn't occuring in the previous two years when we could have took advantage of it.
Simply put: I've never seem them looking as bad as they are now, maybe the windmills of my mind papered over the Souness, Evans or Houllier worst teams but they really have no spark whatsover - unless Gerrard or Torres are playing and its peculiar yet lovely to watch. Despite them hanging on in a match or getting battered you're always expecting a last minute spawny winner or the referee to send off one of the opposition to bring balance back to their universe. And what a universe it is: I'm in the unfortunate position where near enough all of my quite large family support Liverpool, throw in the fact that near enough all my good mates support them too and you'll see my social sphere is full of puns, japes and ripping. What I'm really struggling with this season is that a lot of them steadfast refuse to criticise Benitez and instead heap all of life's ills on the American owners (before we laugh and point, there's plenty of ours who do similar).
I think it's like some massive edition of the emperors new clothes as the loveable Spaniard has time after time put his ego at the expense of the team's results with his rotation and strange faith in [Poor language removed] players. There is no doubt he's playing a cute game with the fans in the media as you only have to see the progress he's made by looking at their bench - it's either bring on Babel or Benayoun for impact. Some squad that like.
Anyway, it's highly enjoyable so long may it continue. We've got our own problems to sort out but there's no denying its a fun sideshow as you can guarantee they would be rubbing it in otherwise.
Back to the soccer. I've not done one of these underwhelming previews without mentioning that the return of the braided one is imminent. You wouldn't be wanting a Kirkby kiss (easy, Davek) from Aaron Mokoena it seems. I hope he's back, along with the Russian as we're in desperate need of a spark somewhere, and some composure in the middle of the park. Or in other words, Phil Neville too.
The 4-4-2 could be reverted to here, it shows slight glimpses of being promising on the weekend, which will give us a chance to see a fitter Yakubu and Saha up front which should be a distinct bonus if we can keep them fit and in form as not too many defences will fancy facing that.
For them, its a case of whether (Nando, lar) Torres is back to give them a threat up front. In the absence of Jagielka's massive back pocket we could have a problem if so as Yobo/Distin does look a little suspect at times, even more so with one of the worlds best strikers running at them.
But sack the negativity, we done alright against them last year and there's a whole winter's worth of ripping at stake here, so I'll wish for what I wish for each time we play them.
Get the [Poor language removed] into them blue boys.
