Well we’re not going to be after any strikers that are consistently scoring 15 in the Premier League are we. But that’s not to say there aren’t players in other leagues that could score 15 and wouldn’t cost us £80m.

How much did Mbeumo cost Brentford?
How much did Mateta cost Palace?
How much did Delap cost Ipswich?
How much did Watkins cost Villa?
How much did Bowen cost West Ham?
How much did Kluivert cost Bournemouth?

Do you want me to continue?
Because we dont have a scouting system that finds them players.

We have a scouting system that 'find' them after they are established, its not really proper scouting is it.

I think Richarlison was about a couple of million when Watford got him we paid 40m
Onana was about 500k when the French side signed him, a year later we paid 30 mil

I find it hilarious that people still act like we set the benchmark for a player’s value.

“£30m gets you a Tosun in this market”

No. £30m gets you a Tosun if you’re 2017/18 Everton with Steve Walsh as DOF, Sam Allardyce as manager and absolute space cadet Farhad Moshiri as owner.
Mbuemo and wissa had 9 and 12 goals last season.

Already on 14 and 11 this season.

Cost £14m combined.

Honestly don’t understand people wanting to continue to shell all the money we have on individual players who have been media hyped in the PL, and are overvalued because of it.

We need to change the approach in our recruitment.

I said it the other day and il say it again.

Our scouting team needs volleying out the club, it really is piss poor.

How many players in the last 10 years have we bought for peanuts and sold for millions?
Or reverse that, how many have we bought for millions and sold for peanuts or let go for free?

John stones the last one? Can’t think of many others.

Branthwaite will be the next.

Lookman, vlasic and onyekuru all made profit but not at that sort of level.

Scouting system might be fine. Issue could be with the people receiving the reports and recommendations and choosing whether to act or not.

Dunno how scouting even works now to be honest. Would have thought it’s not as much of a defined role as it once was.

Maybe, i mean we did have a young Haaland but decided against it.

I think the problem with modern day scouting is, 'data' not sure enough actual scouting gets done meaning actually watching players a lot.

They might watch a couple of games then receive data
Ran x amount of km per game
Pass completion
Interceptions etc...

For me that doesn't give you attitude on the pitch or desire when winning or losing

Also someone (Midfielder) with just one or 2 assists could be putting defence splitting passes through every couple of games but the striker is gash and misses, therefore his stats wont read well.

I’d have thought a lot of this would be outsourced as well. Also not forgetting agent influence with pushing players onto teams.
Recruitment departments must have changed massively over last 20 years

I think nowadays things like your last point are less important. Because the data breaks stuff down that much into “key passes” “big chances created” “expected assists” etc so even if they are coming out with very few due to the strikers, It shows how much they create.

It’s about having the right people interpreting that data combined with those actually seeing what’s happening in terms of their attitude etc.

It’s partly why I’m concerned about Ferguson for £40m. Brighton seem to be excellent in terms of the analytics and generally getting it right on the pitch by purchasing or developing players that fit. Eg. making maupay and welbeck look good.

When they sell for big money, it tends to be to teams like Chelsea, Liverpool etc. the fact it’s us and West Ham in for Ferguson and they are willing to let him leave, raises questions.

Funnily enough, Brighton's exceptional scouting system is more reliant on data than anyone else. They put their faith in data above the eye test and their reach is longer than most because of it.

So teams that manage to find players for cheaper value that go on to do well annd be worth more are just lucky? Brighton are just lucky with their repeated recruitment? Brentford have just been lucky? Why can they pick the best prospect over anyone else?

What a weird way to look at it.

Do you think that Ferguson is still within that group of 200 strikers that may go on to be worth £40m?
Ferguson already is worth £40m. I think that to be successful we need to continually buy players whose value will increase. It would be great to scout as well as Brighton but we clearly don't. If it was easy every team would do it and yes there is a large element of luck involved.

So we should just sign the next Mbeumo, Mateta etc. Of course, it's obvious when you think about it. Pass Thelwell the names of those guys and he'll be right on it.
