Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) was one of Britain's greatest classical composers of the 20th Century.

ARNOLD.webp

He loved watching this, whilst eating a whole box of Heroes chocolates.

Betting odds have it that France or Italy got this.
Posted this elsewhere, but they are both a bit hamstrung from not performing in the semi finals (it's automatic qualification for France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Uk by dint of chucking the most broadcasting cash around). In a normal year that can be overcome by touring the song and getting plenty of radio air play, this year it's not really happened for either nation.

The whole line up is a dirge of solo artists performing indistinguishable pieces, in my opinion it's one of the weakest years in a run of weak years. If you were going to punt on either it's a choice between France's Piaf style song and the livelier Italian number.

Italy will finish top five minimum, Malta could be the value bet to win; don't be put off by them getting a first half draw, four of the last six have won from the first half and Malta are surrounded by dross and have a path to picking up votes.

Lithuania at 66/1 might be worth a tickle as an each way shout.

But, for the first time in ages I am not punting on anyone this year because the usual variables of promoting songs, getting radio time and generating momentum haven't been available.

Backed Italy myself.
