European premier league bombshell.....

If they face a situation in which they have a choice of leaving completely or stay as is but with a wider review, and they leave, their lovely customers will probably torch Anfield. There'd be murder.

It is getting binned. These games will be played on the same days as the Champions League dates to replace them.

So...weekend domestic. Midweek euro super guff.

Anyone who's not in this daft league will probably be in a new branded euro comp.

To make it even worse, I saw on sky that they are "proposing" to play these games on a weekend and P/L matches midweek. That would kill the money coming in to the P/L from the tv companies.

I think this new competition is going to come up against a massive amount of protest from supporters of EVERY team so there is still has a long battle ahead.

Which is what happens currently.

The question is, are the revenues there, to continue to allow them to spend that much more money?

The point I make, and perhaps should have explained in more detail, is that it would happen on a massive scale. No longer would the club/the player be able to fend off approaches such as happened with Baines, for example, and in more recent times Grealish staying with Villa. Those days would be gone in an instant..

And to your second paragraph, yes the invesment in billions in the Super League would mean they could.

They wouldn't get away with that. 100%

They may be trying to emulate the American sports model, but in order to do so they would have to close the league to other competitions and allow for salary caps, true revenue sharing and entry drafts for new talent. The whole goal of American sports leagues is parody, and collective profits and competitiveness. There is no way that Real and Juve are going to sacrifice so that Arsenal can improve itself. I give it 5 years until the bottom dwellers of this SuperLeague are begging to rejoin their domestic leagues.

So it’s the big two (RS and Red Mancs), plus three of Chelsea, Arsenal, blue Mancs and Spurs. Spurs look most vulnerable to miss out, but with Levy in charge they have a shrewd operator.

It’s inevitable it will happen. Games between the big clubs generate worldwide interest. RS vs Red Mancs getting over 100k attendance for a friendly game in the US, no other English fixture would get close to that figure. That interest is mirrored in global TV viewing figures. Unfortunately money talks. I grew up not knowing (or caring) about money in football. Now its what most fans talk about which is sad.

Celtic (and to a lesser extent Rangers for those with a British identity) have a shout at being invited as they have a global support base among Irish people (myself included). In financial terms they are massively underachieving in Scotland.

You are assuming the Sky/BT/ESPN etc. money goes with them.

This will be being pushed by sky and bt no doubt.

If everyone who doesn't like the idea cancels their contracts in protest it will be dead in the water. People power.

Is it a coincidence that it's a FIFA rather than UEFA idea, backed by the huge American financial institution JP Morgan amongst others and so far involving American owned Liverpool and United? Dollar signs are written all over this and their owners know how it's done in the states. It apparently involves all the European 'super clubs' from England, Spain, Germany, Italy and PSG, tbh although it's planned to initially be scheduled for midweek during the regular season it could mean 30 games per side.

How long before their aims aren't satisfied and with the big Asian market to satisfy their fixtures are moved to the weekend? If this is real and gets off the ground it makes project big picture seem a fairly tiny and insignificant proposal.

This proposal is nothing less than a prototype European Super League, there are vacuous promises about competing in domestic leagues but they'll grow so disproportionately wealthy their reserves will do that and if they're thrown out it will be like being banned from an under league.

Noone has yet signed up and you just hope it's only something they're using as leverage to make their position stronger in domestic and European competitions.

My gut feeling is FIFA will want UEFA on board and a compromise around starting dates and formats might be reached possibly with a reformed and reformatted champions league. This isn't just an idea though, it's been formulated over a long period and plans are ready to go public very very soon in a matter of days. It's a very real threat I just hope the furore that's now absolutely certain to explode amongst fans groups and perhaps even governments across Europe will make it morally impossible.

Compared to the other 5 Spurs are a long way behind in the pecking order.

In a few years time they will probably decide on a European League 2 and that's when Rangers and Celtic will be invited.
Unfortunately all of this has been the bigger picture for many years.

What no one has mentioned is the following:

1. If this comes to fruition, those in the European Super League would likely come hunting the best players of the other decent clubs in the Premier League, with the promise of playing in an enhanced competition AND wages that none of the remaining teams in the PL could match.

2. Agents, who are understandably saying nothing at present, are probably rubbing their hands with glee at the above prospect, and the multi-millions they would make as a result of '1' above.

Teams could be stripped of their best players entirely, and be left with the Tom Davies's of this world...
Tom Davies won't look as bad once he's surrounded by players of equal ability.

Let them have the best players, playing exhibition football, and charging a fortune for it. I won't be spending a single penny on any of it.

The prospect of seeing the best players in the world play each other doesn't excite me. I haven't seen Ronaldo play since he left the Premier League, and I've never seen Messi play (domestically). It just doesn't interest me.

Everton being boss and winning something does. If it wasn't for Everton, I'd of turned away from football a long time a go.
