Europa League Final

Compared to us it's not failure obviously. But compared to the rest of the "Top 6" or whatever you want to call them, or to compare them to Arsenal before Wenger got stale, then yes its failure.

In that same period Liverpool have one league cup, Spurs haven’t won anything. So Wenger was outperformed by three teams with blank cheque books whilst he had to balance the books after moving to a new stadium.

I get your point but I think fans of teams have now become so hyped up by media coverage of football that anything other than instant huge success is seen as failure. Sarri can come third, make the league cup final, win the Europa yet the media have painted him as a failure and the fans have responded so he’s probably now out of the door. Same with Conte to some extent, the knives were out for him as soon as he won the title in a way they never have been for Klopp or Pochettino who arguably have failed up to this point for 4 years.

Fair enough. I definitely agree on Sarri. But I think Wenger had gone stale. There were glaring weaknesses in his squad that he went years without addressing. All he did for years was spend his transfer budget on diminutive attacking midfielders. Although Spurs and Liverpool have won less, it's hard not to argue that they haven't overtaken Arsenal. I liken it to our Moyes situation in a way. We haven't finished as high up the league as when he was in charge but I doubt there are too many of us who would want him back now. Sometimes things just go stale and you need a change.

Klopps failure has been his success in a way?

I agreee - but they genuinely think he's some sort of walking spirit of the club

I just think the Arsenal fan criticism of Wenger towards the end was ridiculous. Yes he’d had a barren decade when they moved to the new stadium but throughout most of that he still delivered CL football. Once the stadium was finished and the purse strings opened he bought Ozil and Sanchez and immediately delivered 3 FA Cups as well as starting to go far again in the league cup and Europa yet throughout those period the Wenger or brigade was still going every season. He bought in Aubameyang and Lacazette to the team so who knows what he might have been able to do this season or next season if he was putting together another good team.

They didn’t win regularly before Wenger arrived and then he absolutely swept the board when he first came in but because of that decade in the middle his accomplishments immediately after it were never accepted by a lot of Arsenal fans. Social media has got to the point where if you take a bad loss now it gets rubbed in your face for years on end. I think their fans lost sight of the trophies amidst the embarrassment from heavy losses.

3 FA cups, a league cup final and a European semi final in 5 seasons. ‘Wenger out’. Christ.

They were winning quite a bit under Graham to be fair

Two League Titles, multiple League Cups, an FA Cup and a European trophy (Something Wenger never won)

Plus, Wenger was a yes man for Kroenke and Gazidis, which meant things were never going to change with him at the helm. This is something very important that a lot of people seem to gloss over

I used to think Arsenal fans were out of line to want him gone, but they were more than justified by the end. He could have left after the Villa final in 2015 and they would have thanked him for it, but he chose to linger to satiate his own ego. Clubs like Arsenal should be aiming to win the League, harsh but true. At Everton we'd see 3 FA Cups in 4 years as reason for giving a manager a statue, but they have higher expectations than us

For a long time, the Wenger defence was that he kept them in the Champions League, which was the be-all and end-all for Arsenal's owners, so it wasn't too much of a surprise when finishing sixth was the final straw. For me, he was left behind when the latest generation of training ground managers came in and did to him what he did to the British in the '90s. There's an extra level of detail to the way top sides are set-up now that has made his off-the-cuff style basically redundant, and his inability to find the right blend in midfield led to some terrible hidings in his final years (buying Xhaka is a massive black mark against him).

The media's treatment of him was ridiculously over the top, though, I completely agree. I don't know whether it was payback for his perceived aloofness/arrogance during his peak years, but for whatever reason, he got panned more than anyone I can recall. As for the FA Cups, both van Gaal and Conte were sacked following Wembley victories, which says everything about how that trophy is now regarded.

Emery will regret blowing a top four finish when it was in their own hands, but I think he's a good manager who will do well there given time.

And when they lose on sat night hopefully they will sink back to what they are. A no mark cup team that are only relevant because of their fan base in the media

They won't lose i hope. But then again as Roy Keane said before, you can always rely on Spurs to leave you down!lol

That was still mostly Wenger's (very flaky) team to be honest. Harsh to judge Emery on just one season when Wenger failed for more than 10.

I think Wenger on a whole was doing a good job.Regular top four finishes, and a few FA Cup wins as well.I don't think the latter half of the Wenger era, is the failure that people make out to be.
