I think its more of a degree of being arsed about them. 1990, 1996, were really engaged with them, since then, I have followed them, but when they have gone out, it felt nothing like the earlier tournaments. But this group have produced the same levels of arsed again. In the last WC and this one comp.
This is it for me.
I got into footy because of and during the 2002 World Cup. I didn't start supporting Everton until later that year - when my dad informed me I was an Evertonian (even though I hadn't liked footy before that point).
But from 2002 to 2006, I was obsessed with England as much as Everton. Balled my eyes out when we got knocked out of 2004 (we'd have won it if Rooney stayed fit mind) and 2006, both on pens IIRC.
When we didn't qualify in 2008 I'd already really moved on to just having Everton in my life to disappoint me, and i fell out of love with England for the next few years - mainly because Everton players like Baines and Jagielka would constantly get overlooked and then get pelters whenever they did play.
Laughed when we got knocked out in 2014 and 2016. But tbf to Southgate he really caught something in 2018. I wasn't devastated when we went out, but I enjoyed the ride, and that's where I'm at now. Very much want to go on and win it, though I won't be too disheartened if we don't. It's actually a nice feeling. I'm trying it with Everton, but they've got a special place in my hatred and despair.
