The vote will probably be just that. There was nothing in the court case that said the government had to spell out its strategy or negotiating position, merely that it had to put its request for initiating article 50 before parliament. If the Supreme Court backs up the first judgement I expect the government to put forward the simplest of questions, and I expect the MP's to vote it through. Of course if the SC backs the government then I would still hope that the PM puts it before parliament in order to let the electorate see for themselves what our MP's are about, either with the people or against them......
If she tries that tack I think she could well fail to get it through, as it would be viewed as a tick box exercise and not the full debate that should be held before the Govt takes the country through Brexit.

The MP's ultimately have a duty to pass through a bill allowing article 50 to be invoked.

They however have zero responsibility to pass through a cig packet Bill with zero substance, they'd be failing in their responsibility to the nation if they did so imo. They should knock back any attempt of that nature and tell her to come back with something of substance

May and her Govt have no mandate whatsoever to unilaterally decide what version of Brexit is delivered.

Its all about steps and process. The first step is initiate article 50, we cannot negotiate before that, first we have to press the button so what is wanted or not is irrelevant. Then we spend two years negotiating and end up with a position that we either accept or not, either way after two years, unless the EU Council and ourselves unanimously agree to extend it, then we are out with or without a deal...........
According the ft her tack is going to be to try and negotiate the withdrawal of the 2 year limit before she does anything else.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit!

What made you consider it sarcastic above ironic?

Take sarcasm out of these boards and you're left with mumsnet.

Repeating something over and over constantly displays a lack of self belief, self doubt in your own opinions and case for argument and debate and an inability to develop constructive ways of debating. So wether you find my response sarcastic or not Joey is irrelevant, this constant stating the bleedin' obvious wins nothing and has been discussed for god knows how many pages now?

How about a change of tune and avoid the playground noises and exclamation marks, for sanity alone?

Cheers ;)

At the time of initiating article 50 all the government will have is a wish list as no negotiations will have taken place, so May can propose anything she wants, full access to the EU Market, not paying any monies etc etc...anything she wants, putting the MP's in a position that they cannot refuse it. Article 50 will be initiated, then we start negotiations......

My personal view is if that they don't give the House an assurance that single market access will be the main priority then she'll be in for a rough ride. Let's be clear, if we want single market access, we can have it, it's at what perceived 'cost'.

What you're suggesting there would be disingenuous on her part

There is no assurance that can be given as negotiations will not have started, so no one knows what position may be the final outcome. The only thing we do know for certain is that article 50 will have to be initiated to start the process.......

Corbyn is a scream the day after the vote ok that's it then sign article 50 , and let's get on with itlol
Now he's trying to say he will whip a vote to put conditions in article 50lol
Does he not realise that would lead to a GE and he would get wiped out lol
14 points behind with that action it could be a demolition up north ala Scotland;)
