Yeah for 20m. There was no resale value at all. Throwing 20-30m on players like that is what got us into the mess we are in.
He was a good player in his prime, did next to nothing for us though.
I think a big issue was just throwing money at whichever player the manager for that year wanted. We had no long term strategy for player purchases. You can put Allan into a team and take a hit on him when you've got high resale value from younger/home grown players.
What we did during that time was buy £20m players who were failed signings at other clubs or flavour of the month types who came at inflated fees.
It is a completely different approach signing 20 year olds for £20m where you anticipate a high future fee.
We so rarely look to buy younger players from the championship in the same way others around us do.
