English Everton

But all this doesn't matter. It's still England. Whichever way you slice it, whoever in whatever district decides they are not in England are deluded. Gordon Brown, such as he is, still dictates how you operate. The Queen is still your sovereign. Until the next English Civil War, which I reckon is around 50 years away, it is still England.

There is no argument.

my money is on the next civil war being between 3 sides.
parliament+the army vs the royal family+the public vs leeds utd fans.

Liverpool is in England, but you're kidding yourselves if you think it's a city with a population that thinks of itself as being English. There's definitely loads out supporting England when those chumps qualify themselves for a tournament. But that's about the extent of it. Ask any Scouser and they'll know where their roots are and they wont, by and large, be English. They have dual identity. It's only natural, we are a city comprised of immigrants from all over the British Isles and, because we're a seaport, further afield.

Err, still English. Like it or not. Were you born in Liverpool? Then your in English. Tough, live with it, deal with it, but don't fight it. Its not a bad thing to be English.

Thank you for telling me who I am, but I'll decide my identity thanks very much. Born in Liverpool of Irish and Welsh parents.

You stick to your Morris Dancing in your Lancashire Plains and let the rest of us determine who we are.

its an interesting point.

at what point does an immigrant become a national ?

regardless of parentage , i think if your born in a country and live i that country , then that makes you a national.

take our arteta , he is spanish but could soon play for england.
he is not english and will never be english.
but if he has a son , who is born here , raised here and lives here the that kid will be english imo and not spanish wther he likes it or not.

ive got friends who class themselves as irish , despite the fact they have lived in england for 3 or 4 generations and never stepped foot in ireland. this sort of [Poor language removed] grinds my gears.i dont around saying "no im not english ' im a norman or a viking.

It's a crying shame that people a far less tolerant of the 'English' nationality than of pretty much any other, but there is a stand out reason for it.

When the likes of the BNP and other selected bigots appropriated our flag and identity and used them as a vantage point to spout their bile, they degraded both noble institutions.

People now see someone flying the George Cross outside their house and assume that they must be a far right looney, which is a shame.

Although, having said all of the above, I'm inherently suspicious of conspicuous displays of patriotism, I mean.... why? nothing better to do? :P:lol:

As for the thread topic (something about a local footie team if I remember correctly), I'd certainly like to see a team comprised entirely of Academy Graduates (I'll be happy to relax the nationality clause), if only because they'll know their history, and we won't have had to stump up any cash for them(y)

Well it's stupid to think you're Irish or Welsh or Scots or Jamaican if you were born in Liverpool, that's for sure. You quite clearly are not. But being born in England doesn't automatically incorporate you into an English identity either. I think it's more the case that those people will have a weak connection with nationalism and not identify with anything other than the region/city they come from. I think that just about sums up my identity. Without getting all self conscious Kopite about it, I'm "Scouse" and that's where my identity starts and finishes in a geographical and cultural sense.

Well its different for you and its possibly different for others who have migrated here. But i was born in England, my parents are English, my grandparents are English. So im English.

Im fairly sure HB is from a completely English family, so his claim of not being English is utter bullcrap.

Nobody is telling anybody what Nationality they are, but if you can trace your Parents and Grandparents and they were born in England, your ******* English.

On the other hand if your parents where not born in England, but you are, you can call yourself English, but if you wish to take dual nationality or even the country of your parents birth, thats fine, but to pretend your not English when your family tree smells of Englishness is pathetic.

its weird actually , becouse i feel football is a major cause of the downfall of our beloved flag and national pride.
they hijacked the british bulldog spirit and turned it into something cheap and common.
singing rule brittania used to symbolise the great british spirit , then all of a sudden in the early 80's it meant " we are drawing 0-0 with a country we have no repect for , but we dont care becouse we are hard and gonna get pissed and smash the place up ".

its sad that the only time i see any resembelence to national pride is when england play at sport. how cheap and nasty.

ha ha, on English soil you were born, therefore my friend, like it or not you are English. Hey I want to be Italian and have all the birds flock around my adonis of a body, but I'm not and I have to deal with that.

That's reasonable enough. But I'd also say that "English" is a very complex matter: the likelihood of people having English sounding names and tracing their family back a generation or two to some sleepy hamlet is no proof of being "English" or Anglo-Saxon. The truth of the matter is that those Germanic tribes were barely 100,000 strong and came into a native Celtic population of 2-3 million and intermarriage would have been the result down the generations. Add into that mix the Norse element in the population and you'll be hard pressed to find some pure bred "English" population.

Anyway, we're all just people. Steer clear of nationalist loonies...that's an order from your Uncle daveK. (y)
