English Barca

Everyone always goes on about how Barca have a great youth setup. While that is unquestionably true, one has to wonder how well they would do with having to rely solely on the youth. While they'd be good, they obviously don't believe it's enough, given the immense amount of money they spend on players every year:

Their net spend since the turn of the century is almost 400m euros; which is also approx. their total debt figure (442m Euros last article I could find - April 2011).

The last few years they have spent a net 50 million euros on players every single season.

So, even if you ignore the fact that a lot of youth players sign with Barca because they are Barca, they still spend a incomprehensible amount of money on players even with their fantastic youth setup.

The true measure would come if everybody had to rely solely on their youth. In that case I'd bet on Barça winning la liga consistantly with a strong challenge from Madrid and Athletic Club.

Some bad signings there - Chygrynskiy €25m, Ibrahimovic €49 plus Eto'o...

Bloody hell guys he's just saying the young players look good, no need to gun him down. The Barca comparison is called hyperbole.

You'd be looking at Barca, Real, Bilbao, and Sevilla probably.

Xavi is just under 5 years older than Iniesta. It's a bit like saying Rodwell and Rooney came through together.

i dont even know if im in the right thread but just switched on the d.c match barkley is the dogs b*llocks we're not just gona win da league we've got the double in the bag!!!!

Real Madrid are generally referred to as Madrid. Real ( or 'La Real) is usually used for Real Sociedad. Athletic Club De Bilbao are the second greatest club in the world.
Sorry but it's a pet hate of mine like when people go on about 'La primera liga'
Good shout on Sevilla. But clubs like Sporting De Gijon have also traditionally had a good youth set up. RCD Español are another

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I get more joy watching the young lads come through and make good than I do going out and buying some overpriced European who may or may not come good. I still think the most incredible and awesome accomplishment in World Football is Celtic winning the European Cup in 1967 with a squad composed entirely of home-grown talent; as all of the players in the side were Scottish, and all were born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park. But that's just me, I guess I'm just weird like that.

Barkley, Rodwell and Gueye are the only ones that look first team ready at the minute, don't get carried away.

True, yet with some starts, mostly as a sub and playing for 5-10 minutes, McAleny, for example, can come out good too.
It's just that with youths you have to 'experiment', and that is the most anti-Moyes thing, really.

mate, i'm for experimenting like, but Mcaleny needs a loan deal at a lower level before he's given his proper chance, I don't think reserve team football is the best for his development.

Thought about this, but was too lazy to edit my post like. You're right anyway - imo a 6 month deal to see if he's worth it or ready - if he doesn't show that - extend it for a year, if he shows it - get him back and let him get a few starts as a sub, etc etc.

And I think that Vellios also has the potential to be a first teamer, but only time will tell.
