Yes they could have put us in again and invariably that is what used to happen. These days the choice is often to bat again and pile up the runs whilst giving their bowlers a rest to get ready for the second innings. On this occasion Aus should have put us again and finished it off yesterday. You don't need fresh bowlers when bowling against England's pathetic rabble.Not a cricket fan, but couldn't the Aussies have put us in to bat again because we never got enough to avoid the follow-on, but they decided (rightly) to bat instead.
