So David Hytner in the Guardian has written an article saying how, despite Southgate's efforts, ''Sterling v Gómez will run and run''. I can see his point given the obvious hunger for sensationalism in both mainstream and social media. However he's surely creating a self-fulfilling prophecy there. As always this Will disappear from conversations when journalists decide it's no longer news worthy. Till then, the door is open for Hytner or any other commentator to continúe writing or talking about and say ''see, you can't put a lid on this''.

It looks to me a far too hasty and instant reaction, even if in his (Southgate's) own mind a very principled one. Almost as if he's reacting to the immediate with a severe example setting sanction without considering the extenuating circumstances.

More thought and reflection might have brought a different conclusion, however the camp is just so leaky that this too is a real concern. The leaking sources have to be sorted but then that looks to be wishing for utopia in the current climate.

Southgate has more than enough credit in the bank to allow some leeway with any rash decisions atm and tbh England's position is fairly nigh on impregnable. He has however to hope there are no longer term consequences, having this drag on with players bearing grudges has to be avoided at all costs.

Makes me laugh all this media hype. Little spat between two players and all and sundry get involved. Tom Lawrence did something 100 times worse and no calls from the media to drop him from his national team.

That was just so heinous as to be on another level altogether.

Endangering the lives of himself, and his equally culpable captain and teammates his alcohol fuelled team bonding escapades ending in driving when drunk resulting in his skipper suffering serious injury and losing his job, not only that but the lives of other road users could have been lost or seriously endangered.

Welsh manager Ryan Giggs response was not to rightly condemn and severely sanction such outrageous behaviour but only 'he's a decent young man who behaved out of character' - the contrast is truly and horribly stark.

Ryan Giggs can't afford to ban a player, or they will be playing with 10 men.
