I wonder if the first over the top will be anne sacoolas.
Was chatting to the wife yesterday about this very thing. and was mentioning myself the education part. For me, saying that does sound offensive as there are different levels of education and intelligence, you do see some very intelligent people falling for the soundbites that don't belong in any kind of truth. People see the headline and the next step determines what goes next.
Do you take the sensationalism, lack of information, purposelessly vague brief sentence and go with it, or do you click on the link, do you go away and research what they are talking about. I don't consider myself educated, I hated school and all things academic and was pretty average to poor in most things but I like to think that I still have an analytical logical brain and can see through these headlines and not take them at face value.
This is how Musk and his like work, they are not stupid when it comes to soundbites with no evidence. They know that people are not going to follow up. For example, '250,000+ raped', '250 million to the NHS', 'TV show has a black, gay, disabled king, it is woke gone mad'. Things like that on the surface are appealing to see for some people, on their own. Our hope is that enough people actually look into it and find the working out to be a bit spurious enough to question the number, to see that the EU finances (to and from) don't support this basic statement, or that the TV show is set in an alternate reality with shapeshifters and other fantastical things.
Unfortunately, as we know not enough people do look into it and just regurgitate the surface message until it becomes an undeniable fact to them and others.
He’s an attention whore, delighted over the amount of press he’s got from UK media the last few days, so trying to double down and just keep himself in our current affairs.

I was busy a lot of yesterday and missed all this erupting. Struggling to work out what his angle is really, but I would really just like to be able to read the news again without "Elon Musk says..." starting off the daily headlines.
Enablement, setting the agenda, suggesting now farage is not fit to run reform is suggesting that formerly he ever was. It is normalizing the debate around right leaning and further right sentiment in the national conscience. It's taking liberties with the perception of achievements either real or folly.
Thicko's will lap it up more quickly than anything. They can't help themselves. 'Anything, anyone, to blame so long as it aint me!', 'I'm alright Jack!'.

I think there was a recent case with horrific stuff being released, so people are now looking at past cases and making stupid assumptions

Facebook is an absolute cesspit for this. By the time you've explained to someone that they've just shared nonsense, they've already posted another 10 other links to the most ridiculous items. Proper amateur stuff riddled with spelling mistakes and the most basic graphics yet there are those that lap it up.
Right now, I think faith in our institutions remains strong enough to deal with this, but there is clearly a tipping point, which I think we could unfortunately reach soon. If history has taught us anything, it's that extreme voices become louder and more prominent during difficult times and there can be no question that there is a growing feel that Britain has been in decline for at least a decade now. If Starmer can't deliver on promises of wage growth, housing and health then I worry deeply about the path the country will choose at the next election.
