portsmouth opted against registering for europe because of cash issues, so won whichever cup and didn't feature in europe the following season (the rs were parachuted in instead, fancy that), are the euro fee's the same across the board? What I mean is, could a club just pay it's europa league subs and play that season after season and so not be promoted to the CL?

Yeah, when I was a kid there was some sort of parity between the clubs.
Fergusons rise coincided with Evertons terrible drop off.
By the time Moyes came along, Everton were scrabbling around in Uniteds shadow.
I hate the way Kenwright and Moyes groveled at Fergusons table.
We'll take your cast offs and sell you our generational talent and we'll be grateful just to be in the conversation.
Sickens me, that stuff.
Then last Summer, they were playing media games to try and castigate us for holding on to our best defender.
How times change!!
I don't envisage them getting in much trouble tho, they hit it big just at the right time and are now one of only a handful of clubs in world football that may actually be too big to fail.
I hope they give it a damn good go tho.

I think you've gone back to the 20th century there squire. However, I believe clubs want the stigma and monetary reward of playing in the CL these days rather than operating at a lower level until they're ready.

Didn't River Plate, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal get slimed not so long ago? And Juventus of course, lord knows what would have happened without such loyal players.

Very much doubt masters and the PL will let anything too bad happen to United.
