I don't really see how selling their best player by a considerable distance with improve them on the pitch.

It would hurt in the short term, but in the long term it could be a spring board to clear out the dead wood and bring in new players. They are far too reliant on him right now. Use the money to bring in two decent players at a reasonable price and then make extra funds by selling off some of the flops

It will hit them hard at the start, but would benefit them in the long run. The man truly is toxic at the moment. The fact they've made him apologise must surely show they're losing a bit of patience with him now
 
Can't believe the way they've used Hillsborough to try and make him look good. It's a fine, not a charitable donation. Really, quite sickeningly cynical of them and I'm quite surprised at it to be honest.
