Don't forget folks, Hillsborough could so easily have been us. Indeed my mate went to Sheff Wed away a season or two earlier in the league and said the same thing nearly happened then - and while horrified, he wasn't at all surprised when disaster struck.
I know Heysel left a bad taste for us, however that was some (admittedly fans from Liverpool) idiots, and there were public prosecutions for that - people were brought to account, our unfair treatment notwithstanding. So I think on the whole we've been wise to separate Heysel and H'boro - they just weren't the same thing at all.
Obviously we can't discuss the factors in the ongoing public enquiry until it's finished, but the Hillsborough independant inquiry panel saw a raft of public apology from almost the whole nation including the Prime Minister. As much as I loath the fella, public apologies from the PM don't happen lightly.
Innocent people died attending a football match that day, and we've stood by the other lot since day one, and rightly so. The aftermath wasn't an attack on LFC, it was an attack on Scousers too, that shouldn't be forgotten - red or blue, we all stood together and rightly so.
You'll never change the quirky attitude of football chants, and while often inaccurate or distasteful they're often quite funny. And yes, rib them mercilessly for causing Heysel, but never, ever confuse the feeling about Heysel with the events at Hillsborough in April 1989 - that really, so easily, could have been us. Just imagine that for a moment and reflect. We were lucky, we went to Villa Park that day.
I for one am proud of the stance we took and continue to take on the whole.
