Their transfer record over the past few years is baffling. A lot of times clubs sign players that seem like a good fit at the time, but dont turn out great, or they take a gamble on some cut-price player with potential. Their transfers immediately don't make sense. I feel like a monkey with a sheet of transfer-listed players from European leagues could assemble a better squad with the same budget. Almost like someone involved is sabotaging them.
Is someone on their transfer committee a blue?
To be fair, it looked like they were looking to deepen the squad a little bit. I thought Lallana, while massively overpriced, would be a good squad player for them. I thought Lovren(!) would be a little better than what they had too. Moreno, Can and Markovic were all young, and fitted in with FSG's clear preference for sell on value. I think the Ballotelli signing was where it all started to look a bit strange, particularly after Rodgers had said he didn't want him. He's a decent player in the right system, but he looked massively unsuited to fill the Luis Saurez shaped hole. In retrospect, the thing they didn't buy was one or two genuinely top class players. They fleshed out the squad, but didn't get a gamechanger. I, for one, have to admit that I thought they would be better than they were, but I'm glad I was wrong.
