The thing about 2009 is that I was totally serene about it, not once did I ever think they'd win. Looking at the history just now, I'd say the closest they ever got was here

2 points ahead but played two games more than a United team who had Ronaldo in full swing.
That season has attained mythological status among the kopites who now perceive it a titanic neck and neck struggle, when in reality United were always in full control. Even after the 1-4 at Old Trafford they were 4 points behind United and had played a game more. It was over with a fortnight of the season left.
I think Rodgers was using the 'never been in a title race' to deflect criticism for the one person that will keep him in the job. All and sundry, including the RS dominated media, have said that there was no leadership on the pitch because they were disappointed. When they had calmed down, they realised they were questioning Captain Marvel so changed tack. 'We've had a great season .....blah, blah, blah'.
You're right in 2009 Manu were always in the box seat and there was no sense that they wouldn't win the title. The RS dominated media always like to create myths and fantasies around Anfield and the reasons they haven't won the league in 24 years.
This season, though, you can see and hear it in their voices, they are shell shocked. In 1986, I was gutted when we lost to LFC because we had a great team but they also had a good team and it was always nip and tuck all the way. I remember leaving Oxford's ground, after Lineker missed a very good chance, feeling down. Much like after the 1986 cup final.
They will put on a brave face, like they did in 2009, but it will eat away at them and that will linger like a bad smell.
