ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Why are you trying desperately to be liked by RAWK mate? You do know that they worship Jordan Brian Henderson and Brendan Archibald Rogers? Is that how you want to be remembered?

Basically couldn't give a **** whether they like me or not mate.

I hate Liverpool. But it's the club, rather than the fans I hate. I have too many mates and family members who are reds and are basically the same as the rest of us. Supporting Liverpool doesn't make you one thing or another, it just means you made a very poor choice!

The bellwhiffs on their forum who are claiming that Evertonians are generally mongrels or whatever are equally deluded.

For me it's a bit of fun. I'm not scouse, but I do have plenty of experience being a part of a VERY bitter rivalry over here (google "Kansas Missouri rivalry" or "Border War rivalry" if you are arseed, this isn't the place to explain it). Anyway, I live in the heart of the enemy. Of course I know people who in a sporting context consider me the devil's spawn and vice versa, but when you don't bring up sport it's fine.

It's fun to make fun of LFC. It's fun for them to make fun of us. I think we have more justification for our derision than the do, but I'm on this side of it, so of course I would. It's tribal, and that's part of what makes it fun and meaningful. They have a larger percentage of whoppers in their fanbase, but it's also bigger worldwide so percentages tell you that's going to be true.

Whenever I run into a Red, in person or online in some other forum, I enjoy the banter. I give 'em the business and it's a laugh for me. But at the end of the day I care about Everton doing well period. If we finished 17th and the finished 18th that would give me no joy. If they finish 2nd this year and we finish 3rd, I'm going to be break dancing all the way down my street.

But I don't have to live with it everyday, so it's different for me. Everton are everything. LFC are nothing.

nothing to do with priorities. Don't remember too many instances were Everton fans have been involved in murders like.

Right, it's deplorable and they are tarred with that shame forever. Given the way their chairman at the time tried to blame Chelsea fans etc was just frankly embarrassing.

However, given that we know that hooliganism was rife in British football at that time and we had a rather active firm of our own, can you really say that the same thing wouldn't have happened to us if we had been in that situation?

We're generally all lads from similar backgrounds (albeit there's a few more different accents in amongst them), would Andy Nicholls and co not have steamed in if they'd been in that situation?

There's no difference

They do some stuff I find cringeworthy, but we do some equally ****ing toe-curling stuff.

At the end of the day, whether you like it or not, the difference between us is that we support different, rival teams. Other than that, they are basically the same. Supporting another team doesn't make you some sort of half-breed.

They support the most successful (or 2nd most successful, depending on how you want to measure it) team in the country, we support the 4th/5th most successful team. That's about it.

The issue isnt the support (though they do have a larger than normal whopper element), its the club. Theirs is evil.

As clubs they are very different.

As people and fans, we're not. We just have a different set of priorities because of the club we support

I know we have a different set of priorities.

Our club isn't about win at all costs. Being right all the time or claims of persecution.

Our club is about playing and winning the right way. Giving everything. Nothing but the best. Looking after the community and each other. Having some respect for ourselves. If our players cheat. Or our fans act like beauts we feel shame and tell them don't do it again.

Thats the difference.

From afar...but with some knowledge on the subject...Everton seem much more tied into the community. LFC seem like they they don't have to make an effort...because they really don't have to.

Fair or unfair?

Not unfair.

It just seems like most Reds see their club as something they can be proud of because of what they have achieved in the past, and use it as a way to pump themselves up by association, whereas Everton seem to be genuinely in the blood of Evertonians. I'm not saying Reds aren't passionate about their club, because they go to outlandish extremes to prove it to everyone around the world, but I just feel like Everton are a family. That's why I was drawn. Loyalty. It's easy to be loyal when your club is winning everything. It's not so easy when you experience tough times. Everton have experience a lot of tough times, but the love Evertonians have for their club cannot be severed by circumstance.

That's how I see it. That's what I feel. And I for one, could care less how good they were in the 70's. They have every right to be proud of it, as we do of our good times, but it means fuk all now.

I've had a read through that thread of theirs. And I've seen more than a few wonder why an OOT would support Everton or why kids like Barkely are Blues and shouldn't they be Reds because they are a "bigger" club. That tells me all I need to know about them if they think that's the criteria.

Being an Evertonian is a big thing for me. It's also incredibly important for me that my family are blues. My two lads WILL be blues, my wife is a converted blue (originally Watford, but girls are more easily turned and she's southern), I've worked pretty hard to ensure that my line will be blues. My children's children WILL be blues, I hope to live long enough to make sure of that. It is a great source of dismay to me that my only sibling is a red, and an avid one at that. I really care about this stuff. It's important to me that my family are a dynasty of blues. In a way I'm glad I didn't have any daughters as it's more difficult to influence the people they marry and in turn the leanings of their kids.

Anyway, I have lots of very close red mates and, as previously stated, my brother is a big red, but none of them seem to feel as strongly about this. Is this a blue thing or is it just me?

Two weeks before Heysel. Cup-Winners' Cup final, Rotterdam. Before the game, Everton fans playing footie against local cops in the town square. Not one speck of trouble.

You live in Kansas or Mizzou?
