He's 30 this summer, so they sold him before his value bottomed out.
it was the smart thing to do... Selling him was the smart business thing to do
Stewart Downing bought 2011 for £20 million.
Sold 2013 for £5 million.

Again, I a stress it a lot, if you want to see why Everton are speeding toward the cliff edge,

Currently Everton have 10 players well over 30 in their first team squad
Heitinga 30
Jagielka 31
Alcaraz 31
Kone 30
Pienaar 31
Hibbert 32
Osman 32
Barry 32
Howard 34
Distin 35

Even if 'well over' 30 is judged at being 33 we only have 2 of them, not 10.

Everton are an accident waiting to happen, Liverpool a young side needing time and playing experience (a la Arsenal).
McCarthy 23
Lukaku 20
Barkley 19
Deolofeu 18

In moneyball terms

He hit that one right out the park.

Rodgers today in the Echo.

“Looking at the bigger picture, when we went into the Fulham game we had a target of points for the next five games,” Rodgers added. “If we get our two home wins (against Norwich on Wednesday and West Ham on Saturday) that will keep us on course for that, which is two points a game. That points total should get us to where we want to arrive."

Can anyone work out what calculations this fool was making in his 5 match period points target from Fulham at home through to West Ham at home? He seems to be suggesting they had a 10 point from 15 possible target for those games, which means that he factored in at least a defeat to us in the Derby.

Unless I've read that incorrectly he's factored in a defeat and a draw into five matches.

Very ambitious.

Trying desperately to play down expectations.

This after spending the first two months of the season trying desperately to play up expectations that this would indeed be "their year"

A snake oil salesman in a shiny suit. He'll be found out before long. The cultists are already beginning to turn.

Its called covering your own arse. Tho from him is a bit ironic

Defo. The excuse could have been more convincing though, which leads me to think he just isn';t that bright (or less bright than thought possible). A CL spot chasing team factoring in a five point loss in a period containing three home games against Fulham. Norwich and West Ham and an away against Hull...and with their Derby record at Goodison to us.

The feller's lost it.

He's played them perfectly. Stroking their egos with all the 'family club' 'immense tradition' bull**** that they lap up.

They've been mugged off by a con man. It's completely hilarious.

like poetry that jock

difference is we'll get to the cliff edge and soar off into the sunset on our beautifully designed Lukaku powered hand-glider that is in the shape of Martinez's face

Liverpool get to the cliff edge and plummet headlong onto the rocks below while clinging to their ridiculous and pathetic ornithopter with brendan barking incomprehensible instructions and Suarez flapping his arms like he's been shot

I really hope " Your post in paint " draws this image, I think I will have to call him out.

Revisionism will take care of it though, fear not. None of them really wanted him as manager and they all saw straight through his philosophy.

Post of the year, there.
