They were comfortably knocked out yesterday. I'm surprised the narrative is that they created loads of chances. It's hard to think of a single good save Courtois had to make, he may have had 2 or 3 regulation ones, but thats it. The Xg showed the game to be a 1-1 sort of game (in fairness Liverpool slightly over 1 Madrid slightly under 1) but even that is generous to Liverpool, as most of their shots were happening with 5/6/7 Madrid players in the way (which Xg doesn't pick up).
The best chances in the game fell to Madrid, as did the moment going closest to scoring, The best chances were Vinicious 1 on 1 where he just has to lift it over Alisson, or the Benema free header from about 4 yards. They were also inches away from tap ins on at least 2 occasions (which againwas closer than anything Liverpool managed). The closest either team came was Madrid hitting the post.
Liverpool huffed and puffed as usual but never really got close to scoring, and really outside of the early Salah decent chance never really created anything clear cut at all. Madrid created higher quality chances while not really trying to attack for most of the game. Had Madrid needed to go through the gears, as they did in the 1st game, you always felt goals were there for them. They didn't need to, so they conserved energy and got the 0-0 they were after. Thts the difference with big clubs like Madrid going for multiple trophies, they think long term. It's an injury ravaged squad, so you always have half an eye ion the next fixtures. Don't waste energy on a team like Liverpool when you might need more in future games for the league title. If you can win but playing in 2nd gear, just do that instead.
As for Liverpool, the big omission is Thiago. Klopp went all in on him and has now not played him in the biggest games, preferring a clogger like Milner who's 36. They are probably paying Thiago-with bonuses 400k per week. The idea that he's further down the pecking order than Milner will be extremely worrying I'm sure. When he came on, the pressure dissipated as well. Sies just go back to playing through Liverpool easily. He doesn't suit the style of what they want at all, and frankly he got shown up by Modric last night who showed him how you control and run a game, even in your mid 30's. Thiago is not that level of player, he never has been, and he never will be. He had a great 6 months, but thats about it.
It's also amusing to see the much fabled Jota come on and fluff his lines again. He's a decent player but christ he's been overly built up again. He also made them worse last night. I like Jota, he's good, but he's not great never mind world class. Real Madrid's 4th choice right back basically stuck him in his pocket last night.
So overall an enjoyable watch. Another year, another 350m spent on wages (in the top 5 of Europe) and another season with absolutely nothing to show for it. I make that 6 years Klopp's been there, 23 potential trophies, and he's won 2, while having one of the biggest wage bills in Europe in the process. You'd think the more logical in their fanbase will start to ask some questions soon.
Thiago - could be wrong, but I think it is indicitive of Klopp prioritising the top 4 ahead of Madrid. He played both league games
Jota - was absolute gash yesterday
