ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

...and so it begins lol

I predicted this before Christmas.

The reality is, Real Madrid and Barca don't have much money, and will want Salah "on the cheap" so probably for 50m ish (top end). It is going to get really really messy.

I remember when Van Nistlerooy when to Madrid, aged 29, who was very much the Salah of his day, and he went for £13m which was way below market value. They're not going to pay a bomb for Salah who's nearly 29.

As a slight aside look at Mane and Firmino. Mane has 3 goals in 20 games. Firmino has 1 goal in 13 in the league. Both look to have reached that cliff footballers can get too. Mane is 29 in a cuple of weeks and Firmino is nearly 31. Neither are coming back to roaring form, and while I expect the above numbers to improve, they won't be getting back to peak levels of 15-20 goals a season.

Across a season their current numbers are where you expect someone to get about 5 league goals a seaso to get. Even if they both double that in the current drop off, you're still only at 10 goals each, and requiring them not to get injured.

Anyway, long story short, I do wonder how long it is until Salah falls off the same cliff they have.

Yes, if anything it would be ideal if Salah stays with them.

Demotivated and then following a downward trajectory with the 3 of them on huge money

Yes esssentially that. I'm far happier that Salah stays, than they get say 70m+ they can invest on 2-3 new players where FSG have had some success in the past.

I said a few games ago, all 3 probably need to play number 9, in a slower league and/or for a manager like Ancelotti, who would use their skills in and around the goal. It makes sense for none of them, given the miles on the legs, to be doing the donkey work. The issue is, you can't carry 3. You can carry 1, but not 3 and in honesty in Klopps system you can't carry any. They are also carrying Thiago in midfield as well.

But yes, I am happy for Salah to stay, there is far more chance he falls off the same cliff Mane/Firmino has next season so even if they improve a bit, it's likely they are net 0 on this season anyway as a best case scenario if it happens. If he holds on for another 12 months, with him getting another year older and 12 months on the deal, the value just goes 1 way.

My gut feeling on this states Salah has been given some guarentees he can leave at the end of this season, and Liverpool are pricing him out of a move, with likely Madrid saying to him that he will have to get Liverpool to drop the price. I hope thats true, as he might just throw the towel in if it is.

never go into this thread but happy I did for such an interesting piece..

question though : if you were in their shoes.. wouldn’t you take it.. or in ours.. knowing you would get a title within a few seasons and then have to do a rebuild... for a team that hasn’t seen a league title in decades... wouldn’t you take it without hesitation?

Thanks mate just seen this, appreciate the kind words!

As for Liverpool, if I was a red I'd be delighted with what he had done and happily have sacrificed probably never seeing them win a trophy again to get the league title. With Everton I kind of feel, if someone offered me a league title and a European trophty then nothing, I'd probably take the deal!

But it's always difficult when you are on the other side of that agreement. It's like the essence of Beckets Waiting For Godot, the human conscious is always wanting that 1 jump too many to ever truly be satisfied.

As for Klopp though I'd also be realistic enough to see that he has made a real mess of this season post Christmas. He has banged on too much about an unfortunate injury to VVD and injuries more nroadly. I'd know we had neither the most players injured, not the most time spent out injured of players, so it's really not an excuse. And that, perhaps he's not best suited for what was needed moving forward.

At least he'll dive gracefully when he does.

Their lineup today just screams “we’re not getting top 4 this season so let’s protect our players and throw everything we have at champions league as it’s the only way we’re gonna qualify for next season “
Even so, on their current form and even with usual slice of luck that seems to follow them, if they end up drawing PSG, Dortmund, City or Bayern next round, it could end up a cricket score.

We can hope

Almost a 2nd 11 today.

Really hope Fulham can get something from this game.
