I reply "Ramos, Maldini, Puyol, Pique, Baresi, Costacurta, Nesta, Cannavaro, Ferdinand, Chielini, Stam, should I go on?"

proper weird narrative this, isn’t it?

Theres absolutely no doubting vanDijk is an excellent centre half.
But they’re SO deluded, they genuinely reckon he’s up there with the best players of all time.

Hes not even in the top 20. I can think of 3 United defenders in the past 15 years who have been better than him.

better than Maldini, Nesta and Baresi..

That's the thing mate, I've said to him that VVD is a great player, that's not enough for his deluded mentality though.
