Correct, League Cup has only been taken seriously since Mourinho joined Chelsea in 2004. Before that you would regularly see finals such as Boro v Bolton, Spurs v Blackburn and Leicester v Tranmere. Can't the powers that be still issue retrospective punishment if they see fit.
I recall Duncan getting a three match ban after flooring a Villa player in the build up to a Rooney goal. The incident picked up after being spotted on a TV recording.
