Purely anecdotal. No scientific method and I guess we'll never know for sure, but just from what I saw and heard, they were more popular in the 2014 run-in than they are now. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it was their behaviour during the 2014 run-in that catalysed a lot of neutrals' change in perception.
Like I say, I could be wrong but my own feeling is that they are viewed less favourably now than they were 8 years ago.
IDK - people hate frauds, and that's a big reason for everyone hating them up and down the country for decades. Extremely weird, entitled fanbase obsessed with a team that was never truly good.
Klopp arrives and for the first time in 30 years they're actually good. God works in mysterious ways, though, and a global plague cancels football - they don't get to win the league, no one cares (did they get the real league trophy as a gesture? I don't actually know), and the team is now entering the cycle of decline.
I'd say the neutral would be more sympathetic to them now - but decades of being the Jehovah Witnesses of the league makes its mark I suppose.
