I disagree - I have argued the same for ourselves, I dont think the Europa league is some sort of utopia and it inhibits progress rather than assists it.

Can't agree with that to be honest. European football is European football. Winning it guarantees an automatic CL spot. It also sets you up for for playing the CL which is totally different to the PL. Some great away days / nights as well for fans. I agree is can put strain on the PL fixtures but so does the CL. I'd say bring it on!

I agree & I dont think there is a quick fix personally, what I'm trying to say is there is reasonable rationale to write the season off as an anomaly, whether that is right or wrong. I realise all clubs have had to deal with the same issues, but internally at Liverpool the will look at the injuries, lack of crowd, Covid season, possibly VAR and so on & just say "write it off as a freak and move one" -

I think in a weird way, it gives them a physchological chance to bounce back which you don't under any other circumstances. Even the practicality of the players being in a better headspace once lockdown is over will be a positive.

With all that said, I think the problems run way deeper & they will struggle to bounce back here, but my belief would be they will go down the "write it off" approach & get players back in positions get two or three out & in and go for a "fresh start" with lots of Unity with the fans etc etc messages.

...and then the wheels will start to fell off again, because as you say - the problems run deeper

on a side note - Joachim Löw will step down after the Euros. I suspect that raises the likelyhood of Klopp going significantly

Don't think Klopp is ready to step away from club management. Can't imagine him coaching a national team at this point in his career and not having everyday managerial duties and the opportunity to really implement his style of play.

Yes PPT & I can absolutely see both sides of it & all your points are spot on, but for me it depends on the end goal for CA reign. If that is top 4 and CL, then Europa league will not help, if it's enjoy the ride then as you say, enjoy it.

Bringing it back to this thread, my take is Liverpool have one year to reset and get back in the top 4, their best bet is no Europa and they will know that. They can sustain this squad with one year out of Europe (One or two might leave) but two years back to back and every high profile player will want to walk away.

Liverpool is the club which holds the English record for the highest spend in a calendar year, just three years ago.

It also sets you up for for playing the CL which is totally different to the PL. Some great away days / nights as well for fans. I agree is can put strain on the PL fixtures but so does the CL. I'd say bring it on!

Only teams with CL (or very near CL) capability...who for some reason failed to qualify or stay the course in the CL... already in board, quality squad numbers etc can do well in it.
Untd, Arsenal, Chelsea City...maybe Spurs...and similar teams in Europe.
The group stages are easy enough, but time and effort consuming. Then the big boy drop outs come in and the other group winners.

It would take an exceptional team to finish say 5th,
Then do well (semi minimum) in the Europa And finish in the C L places
Then mount a viable CL campaign
So no, IMO, it doesn't set you up for the CL - at best its season 4...if you're lucky, in a 6 or 7 season progression.
And if I'm generous I see us at year 2 atm.

International competition is the perfect arena for his style - gets the players for a few weeks of the year, winds them up like a spring, demands 150% of 'Heavy Metal Football' bollocks for every game and damn the consequences for those players and their clubs.

I dont believe so - it requires huge volume of collective training which he wouldnt have & also not suitable to a condensed tournament, particularly in the heat of june or Qatar

I think it depends how Ancelotti improves your squad to be fair.
United finished in 5th position in 2016 and qualified for the Europa league and won it in 2017.
They then finished 2nd in the PL in 2018 so it's possible. I agree maybe 2 seasons and a couple of decent transfer windows and things maybe different. However, if the opportunity arises I'd grab it with both hands. Great for the club, the fans and the finances.

this is correct Degsy & the stats back it up. There is a huge drop V's average points when teams start a season in the Europa league, to the best of my knowledge, only twice has a team in the Europa league gone on to finish top 4 the next season
