His mom dying might be a factor. As @MikeH72 has pointed out, he's tetchy and petulant at the best of times. So arguably gets heavily stressed out. I know how much losing a parent can fundamentally pull the rug from under you. So add it on to someone prone to stress... I wouldn't blame him if he did to be honest.

Away from football, I have every sympathy for him after the loss of his mother, and I’m sure it’ll be having a big toll on him as it would the majority of people.

It may have been prudent to send a subordinate if he wasn’t in the right mind, but their poor performances are a different matter entirely.
