I don’t want either to leave. They’re both playing at their absolute max, they can’t get any better, it’s more likely that they won’t have as good a season next year. Salah has already failed to hit the heights of last season.
I want their big players to get stuck on mega contracts with Liverpool unable to shift them on. As soon as either of them lose a yard of pace they’ll be practically worthless. What we dont want is for what happened with Coutinho where they got a huge fee for him and got to reinvest it in first team players.
We need this team to keep missing out and get to a scenario where the owners can’t afford to buy without selling a mega star but the stars have declined to the point no one wants them for big money.
I think this makes some sense to be honest, however counter intuitive it sounds. In many ways the real force behind their resurgence and "success" is Michael Edwards, who to be fair has shown an incredible ability to pinpoint players in the £30-£70 million pounds bracket.
It's easy to say, if you are spending those figures you should expect as much, but compare his hit rate to say Manchester United, or Chelsea or even Arsenal. To me they would be very dangerous if they had another £150 million to spend but be minus one of the two aforementioned.
Look at Coutinho too. I know it's not exact like this (as you could say they signed Keita and Fabinho with the lower and much more likely end of the fee) but selling him allowed them to bring in Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson. I am not sure they sign either if they didn't sell Coutinho. I think they look at £75 million for a centre half as exorbitant and £70 for what had been a bit of an erratic goalkeeper as being too much. However given they got £100 million + for Coutinho it allowed for the purse strings to be loosened a bit.
You also have to look at the ages of said players, I think there front 3 are now what, 27-28 years of age. They are probably past their peak years now.
We had a similar dilemma (albeit on a much smaller scale) with Moyes. We didn't move enough players on.
