BREAKING NEWS: 5.8 earthquake in Virginia felt in Washington DC, New York City and North Carolina.

That was pretty cool actually. It didn't feel like a 5.8, not that I'd know what one feels like.

We had one last summer too.

From NBC Washington:

"The Washington, D.C., region shook at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday.

The rumbling was felt across Virginia, Maryland, and the District.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the event was an earthquake, which registered 5.8 in magnitude and took place 3.7 miles below the surface.

The quake was 9 miles from Mineral, Virginia, 90 miles southwest of D.C, News4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer reported. It lasted about 30-40 seconds.

The U.S. Capitol was evacuated after light fixtures shook on the ceiling.

NBC News reported tremors were felt as far away as Martha's Vineyard where the president is on vacation.

There were reports of earthquakes today in Ohio and parts of New York.

More updates as they become available."

From CNN:

"An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck near Washington, D.C., the U.S.Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was in Virginia.

The quake was felt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York City and on Martha's Vineyard where President Barack Obama is vacationing. Cell phone service has been disrupted in New York City where parts of Manhattan have been evacuated.

"Everybody was told to take the stairs," Wolf Blitzer said, speaking live at 2 p.m. E.T. from CNN's D.C. bureau.

The Pentagon has been evacuated, CNN's Barbara Starr reports. "When the building began shaking rather violently, hundreds of people began streaming out," she said, because many people thought that the building was under attack. Starr was standing in the Pentagon's press office when the roof started to shake.

Twitter traffic suggests the quake was felt all over the east coast.

In Philadelphia, HunterPence3 tweeted, "Wow Earthquake just shook the entire locker room!"

In Cleveland, "tribeinsider" wrote "I'm no expert but i think we just had an earthquake here."

And even in Toronto, tweets said that the shaking could be felt for minutes."

I know tiny ones happen all the time but a big one (admittedly by British standards) occured in the last couple of years and its the first time i've ever been able to feel the effects. Such a strange sensation but not wholly unpleasant. Obviously the big ones in other parts of the world are catastrophic and tragic and I hope this one passed without injury.

5.8? There were at least 5, 5 magnitude earthquakes and a 6 across the world yesterday.

Wake me up when your hitting 7.5, please.

And I thought this was about the film!

Was pretty nutty. On the 8th floor of my office in Newark and the building starts shaking. I'm thinking I'm passing out when someone else says, the building is shaking. Didn't need an invitation to leave.

You fool, that's the perfect opportunity to shag a frightened young busty temp in the stationary cupboard. "You know, I dont know if we are going to get through this..." Its like a free pass.
