On holiday at the moment. Started to read a book on my kindle fire. Not really feeling it though. I'm wondering if it's because it's quite heavy though.

I know I'd prefer a book but I'm not particularly against electronic reading devices.

Does anyone use them? Think it's worth me investing in a, lighter, specifically designed e reader over the tablet?
 

Reading a book on an e-reader is very different to on a tablet as the screen does not have that unhelpful sheen and is much lighter. Whether that is right for you though is definitely a matter of personal choice.
 
I went for a Kindle Fire a couple of years ago, I needed something to download and research whitepapers and websites for a postgrad without sitting on a PC the whole time. The e-book function was almost a bonus but my brother in law gave me a stack of mobi files for 1000s of titles and I've started using it more and more as a reader.
It did take a while to make the transition but I like it. Still do buy and read books though.
 
The entry level Kindle is probably better for reading. The Fire is to try and also lure you into Amazon's movie downloads and the likes. It's a great screen (as long as you are out of the sun) but, as a tablet, it is very tied to Amazon's goods and services (no Sky Go app is available for it for example).

My wife has a Kindle fire and really likes it. I have the cheap Kindle and that does me fine. I did start reading stuff using the Kindle app on an iPad and the availability of colour for the illustrations was a revelation......
 
The Kindle Fire isn't designed for reading black on white text - It's got a brilliant screen (especially the HD version) and is ideal for viewing PDFs of magazines, but it isn't suitable for books (IMO)

The original Kindle's are brilliant for it though - And considerably lighter
 

Got a "kobo" as a Xmas pressie, I think there good, battery life is excellant, gives me the option of differant ways to read the text, photos (if any) in the books come up in good quality, can't really say a bad word about them, it's also nice and light. If I want I can get Facebook and google as well, so it's an all round good buy.............(also no one knows what defuq yer reading as they can't see the cover!)
 
Have tried reading a book on a tablet and found the contrast very straining on the eyes. Much prefer my kindle for reading.
 
I got a Paperwhite a while back and, although I still enjoy buying books, I probably use it more these days (especially getting cheapo books from an author I know or I think I might enjoy). One big advantage is reading in bed not disturbing gf with light on. Another is not having to take masses of books away with you.

She has a Fire and I can't imagine them being as enjoyable to use - the way the light works is very different. In the sun they are useless, whereas the Paperwhite works well.
 
I have a kindle, one of the old ones with a keyboard.
The Mrs broke the screen on her kindle and replaced it with a Kobo.
Not much to choose between the two although books are incompatible between the two (hers has a light on it though, while mine doesn't), you can use a program called Calibre to convert them.
 
I have a Kindle Paperwhite, I just came back from reading Wuthering Heights out loud with my mum. :D I quite like it, ever since I have it I usually take it with myself on public transport and the time I spend reading has steadily increased, so I'm quite satisfied. Also, I tend to read a lot in foreign languages, so the dictionary and vocabulary learning functions are of huge help during reading.
 

I have the original Kindle, which was bought as a present for me a few years ago. I was hugely skeptical about it but wouldn't go back to paper now. As others have said, it's way better than a Fire or tablet for reading.
 
Have a Kindle paperweight which I love and an IPad Air for work but I have the Kindle app on there too. I never thought I would go over to an e reader but with the amount of reading I do it's brilliant
 
I have an iPad mini and it's perfect. The full size ipad is too big. The mini is great for reading, browsing the internet and you can pair it with Apple TV and stream from your device to your TV.
 
Had a kindle entry level but, as was said, it is not good in the sun. Eventually died and now have a kindle paperwhite. The paperwhite is great and light enough. The kindle fire is heavy.
 
Thanks for all the advice there. Think I will invest. The amount of classics available for free makes it worth the price I'd say. Newer books I think I'll stick to paper though. Any idea how much one if those paper whites goes for now?
